Removing Double Points in Imported Mesh

I have imported a mesh stored in .obj file. I hve noticed, that for some difficult to understand reasons, the mesh has two points overlapping on many places in the mesh.

The mesh contains tens of thousands points. Is there a way how to get rid of the doubled points please?

I am playing with point/edges welding, but if I select two points or edges, I am getting some erorr messages, or nothing happens.

Could you advise please, correct workflo for what I need?

Try Modify > Poly Mesh > Filter Points
