Marking too many faces

New to Maya...

I have this problem fx when i make a polygon sphere - when i try to mark a area/face it always marks two. It like there is this axes down the midle and when i mark one, it automatically marks the same on the other side of the axes (see picture).

Can somebody please tell me how to solve this? It might be really easy, but i just can't figure how to make it stop.

You might have accidently enabled reflection under the tool in use ,so whatever faces edges or vertices you select in one side are reflected on the other side..uncheck mirror selection under the tool option...is found on the move tool, scale and rotate tool, they all have reflection settings.
