I am sick of AutoCAD crashing!!!!!

ARRRRRRR!

about 3-5 times a day almost every session during real time pan/zoom and
even saving, either one of three things happen...

1. FATAL ERROR, then is shuts down and i have to restart it. and send a
report.
2. the computer just restarts...
3. Blue screen saying Error bla bla bla 'Begining Memory Dump' it never
finishes so i have to resart the computer.

both me and my collegue get these crashes...we cant be the only ones!

James,

You are using Mechanical Desktop. I would suggest also posting in the
Mechanical Desktop group as it is actually a different product. One
interesting thing is you are using a gaming card for 3D Mechanical design
which is not a good combination. Make sure you have the proper NVIDIA
drivers as a bad one could cause a crash of the OS in any application doing
heavy work such as 3D. The limitation of the GeForce gaming card compared to
the CAD/3D certified version Quadro is the buffer limits which when exceeded
can crash as they were not intended for 3D CAD. I have discussed this at
length with NVIDIA.

Sincerely,
Shaan Hurley

thanks for the reply,

The Card is fine using all other programs including Inventor. but i only use
AutoCAD now for basic 2D stuff...

in fact the card has one of the best performance benchmark reports that us
guys in the inventor 7 NG has ever seen.... (wierd i know!)

I have the latest drivers for the card.

i only have symantec corporate virus client running.(cant disable it)

any further suggestions?

cheers

james

I would almost say that it is your memory card becuase of the error you are
getting about "Memory Dump". We here have almost the same computer as you
except we run XP Pro, have 1GB of RDRAM and use the Quadro 900XGL. It seems
to me that a buffer is being maxed on on your memory, so its either the
video card or the RAM. (my co-worker runs AutoCAD 2004 all day and never has
had a problem). Maybe you could have IT take a look, if that option is
available.

If you use hardware graphic acceleration you may want to try switching to
software:

Options dialog -> System tab -> Properties button -> Software radio button.

Thanks,
Misha

As Shaan suggested you might want to look at the MDT2004

The MDT2004 newsgroup may be found at

James, since it appears you are in the IV NG a lot, you

may not know about the SP's and fixes available for Mechanical Desktop 2004

You probably have Inventor Series 7 loaded and if this is

so the Download site you need is

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/index?siteID=123112&id=2334435&linkID=3016127

Be sure you get the correct SP's, there are differences

between the Inventor series and Inventor Series Pro

Sp's for Mechanical Desktop. When complete you type AMVER

in the Mechanical Desktop Command line and it should report

SP2.

type WHIPARC at command line and change the system variable back to 0 instead of 1. This seems to have fixed my panning w/ FATAL ERROR problem.

I know this might be a little off the wall, but turn off your screen saver if you are using one. We had a couple off crash issues here and it turned out to be this. The windows marquee seems to be the biggest culpret.
