MDT crashes and other erratic behavior.

OK where to begin... I manage about 19 licenses of AIS 2008, we use MDT 2008 mostly with some use of Inventor 2008 for sheetmetal work. I have been using AutoCAD for many years but I am new to MDT and Inventor... HELP!

The installs were done in one of two ways, either with a deployment that was created by the previous CAD guys and a Autodesk reseller/training/consulting company or from Autodesk media (4 disk original CD set) service packs are up to date and hot fixes have been applied.

That said the issues run the gambit and I am not sure why. Here is a short list of the issues we are seeing, (any input from those more familiar with MDT is appreciated, so please chime in)!

  • Upon opening, MDT just freezes and then shuts down completely no errors or anything. (this has happened on multiple machines with multiple different drawings. so it is nt able to narrow it down to one or two drawings or even one or two workstations.)

  • After a drawing is open it appears to work fine then "FATAL ERROR" or "Unhandled Exception Error" or "Unhandled Access" and again CRASH.... Happens on multiple drawings and multiple workstations, it seems to make no difference where we go or what we do we get the same result with different hardware and software.

  • Files of different sizes seem to be seeing the same issues as above, it doesn't matter if it is a 1,500 kb drawing or a 35,000 kb drawing the result is a crash.

I would say on average we see 5 to 10 complete shut down the program crashes on 90% of our machines a day. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling AIS and MDT, even uninstalling the OS and starting over fresh and still the same issues arise... Is MDT/inventor just that unstable, or is something else happening here? I am use to crashes but this is out of control!

Computer specs, are they all the the same? What video card(s)? driver
version? That would be one place I would look.

Few things to try:

AMRECOVER on a few dwgs and see if there are any problems

Options > AM:Preferences > set Desktop  Safety Control to
Always

If the file opens with no problem, try a PURGE then AUDIT and see if there
are any errors

If there are any external assemblies attached or xrefs, do the same for
those.

Jason, thanks for the comment. I have taken your advice and switched the setting to Always for Desktop Audit Control. I have done the AMRECOVER (then went down the tree and did the same on all the xrefs) then did Purge and Audit on all the drawings as well. There are usually errors on the files in both AMRECOVER and the standard AUDIT. the resulting "clean files" seem to perform somewhat better for a very short time then have the same issues. (when I say short time it could be as short as say 15 minutes to 1 hour...) Then the same Crashing, Fatal Error and Unhandled Access/Exception errors again kill the drawing and or the entire instance of MDT.

The hardware varries and the problems are across the board. below are a few examples of typical systems seeing the issues:

Windows XP Pro 32 bit
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.2GHz
3.00 GB of RAM
500 GB HD w/430 GB free space
Nvidia QuadroFX 370
AutoCAD certified driver (6.14.0011.6939)
Running in D3D (OpenGL caused even more crashes)

Windows XP Pro 32 bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
3.50 GB of RAM
250 GB HD w/200 GB free space
Nvidia QuadroFX 3500
AutoCAD certified driver (6.14.0011.6939)
Running in D3D (OpenGL caused even more crashes)

Windows XP Pro 32 bit
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz
3.00 GB of RAM
80 GB HD w/40 GB free space
Nvidia QuadroFX 370
AutoCAD certified driver (6.14.0011.6939)
