BOM - balloons

XP PRO SP2 INV2008 SUITE - MDT 2008
I have just started using MDT2008 and am already pulling my hair out....
Situation - Large assembly with multiple external subassemblies and even some of these subassemblies have subassemblies..
Problem - how do I get MDT2008 to balloon single parts in the drawing layout? I have read that I need to create a bill of materials for each assembly, subassembly, but when I use the ambom command, I just get the main BOM and when I balloon, I can only balloon the assemblies. Do I need to create a BOM for every single assembly and subassembly? They already exist in the external file but can't seem to access in the main model.

Just a thought - what was wrong with the way MDT ballooned before? In MDT6 I could toggle between part, sub-assembly, and assembly with the same balloon and same BOM. I guess that was too easy?

We have the same problem...

Hi,

Please follow below steps and let me know if it works for you.

1. Command ambom
2. click on Expand/Collapse button such that BOM is expanded (image attached) and you see all single parts
3. now try to balloon using AutoAll or Auto option in balloon.

By the way, you need not create BOM for every single sub assenbly.

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Sridhar

Sridhar, while you're on the subject of bom, is it possible to get bom/parts
list to sort by item number ascending on a structured list? Never could get
this to work. Something that have been bugging me for a while.

Hi Jason,

I could sort by item number in ascending or descending order on a structered view of BOM and Parts list. Find attached image file.

1. command ambom or ampartlist
2. change the view type to "Structure View"
3. click Sort-->in the sort dialog box-->select item under "Key1" and enable ascending or descending
4. click OK on all dialog boxes to see the parts sorted.

If this is not the issue, please provide few more detailed steps or a sample dwg and expected result.

Thanks,
Sridhar

Thanks Sridhar, The problem is with the subs resorting (see attached). The
main level parts resort fine but if the item #s are not in the correct order
in the subs, nothing happens, they stay in that order. That is in the BOM.
If I sort in a parts list, it's very unpredictable as to what will happen.

Thanks Sridhar. Didn't know it was a bug or I would have reported it sooner.
It's been around for as long as I've been using MDT. I just assumed it was
something that couldn't be fixed.
