Removing n-gons - selecting edge and vertex in face select mode?

Hi in this spot in the jetpack tutorial video

http://youtu.be/lLBDXbnmQnQ?t=11m59s

it is in the face select multi-component mode but she is selecting a vertex and an edge at the same time and using "connect". I can't figure out how to do that....

  1. Don't turn Connect on yet. It should not be highlighted blue.
  2. Now - with Multi-Component mode enabled - select the vert (it will turn yellow).
  3. Hold Shift on your keyboard and sleect the edge (it will turn orange).
  4. Now press Connect.

Thanks I wasn't aware that multi-component mode could let you choose between vertices, edges and faces depending on what item you were closest to. I thought you had to be in a single mode at once.
