xp64 + 2009 very slow what am I doing wrong?

I just cracked open 2009 on my new xp64 machine and some things are not working correctly regarding performance.

Any operation in windows places like folders is blindingly fast. In IV2009, studio environment, the rendering takes about 8x time as 2008 on my old machine. Also there is a complete takeover of the processors such that I can hardly do ANYTHING else while the machine chugs thru the render.

What am I doing wrong? any suggestions please..

Check graphics card drivers first for any updates

Thanks.

I updated the driver for the card. I used the software for the card "catalyst" to change the setting for it to "optimum performance" vs. optimum display. Things have improved some, I think.

It's been a while since I changed machines, and this one is 64 bit which is new to me. Should I be worried about the page file size and 4mb switch? I thought x64 made that stuff irrelevant.

Any other suggestions? Here are the diagnostics from IV2009 as it currently stands:

This Direct3D graphics driver is Microsoft WHQL certified
Graphics Hardware Description: Radeon X1300/X1550 Series
Direct3D \ Hardware Renderer
Graphics driver file ati2dvag.dll is version 6.14.0010.6822
Using Full optimization (this is the recommended setting)
The display is using 32-bit color

Radeon......ATI?
I am not sure if this still applies but ATI used to stand for "Always
Trashes Inventor"...don't know if it's still true but I have bad luck with
anything ATI.

set the page file size to max.
I run a xp64 hp workstation at work with 8GB of ram
I run Ansys on it (set to use multi processor)
it is really fast but there are some graphics issues.
word 2003 freezes up on occasion when there is a graphic on the doc.
most of the corporate printers I cant use.
in Ansys if you do a certain sequence in the graphics area it crashes the program.
Have you considered or tested Vista64bit. I get the idea that not a lot of effort is put into making xp64bit bugfree.
by the way I am running a Quadro fx3500, so the fault is not definitely the graphics card.

I also noticed that when Ansys is using say 4.5GB of mem, then you cant even get the windows explorer to do anything. so this seems normal.

It should be renamed ATE "Always Trahes EVERYTHING!"
Never had any success with anything ATI, always ended
up returning ATI stuff for something that actually worked.

Studio makes use of all avaliable processors. If you need to do something
else while a rendering is being created, set the affinity of Inventor
through the task manager so it uses all but one processor.

As far as the rendering taking longer, are you using the same rendering
settings as were used in IV 2008? Several thing were added/changed for 2009.
Such as:
-Soft Shadow has been improved so that it works as expected without placing
a part off in the distance to determine the shadow.
-A fourth anti-alias option has been added that takes considerably longer to
compute.
-Camera DOF has been added which also adds to processing time.
