How can I get a wmf file from a Inventor 7 drawing to insert in a Word document?

Not easily...But there is a way :-

Save as DWG from Inventor

Open the DWG file in AutoCAD

Use the WMFOUT command in AutoCAD

Hope this is of use to you

Actually I think there is still a program on Charles site called Export Preview Images
that I started and Charles finished that does it. Unfortunately they are just the preview
image stored in the file though.

Won't that be a raster image though rather than a vector based one?

Maybe R9 will let us copy & paste into Word.... 😉

The export is a WMF, that as I remember scales properly. This isn't the addin program,
but rather a standalone EXE.

The other thing you could use that scales well is DWF. Just use insert special and you
can embed the DWF in Word.

But if you do that (DWF), doesn't anyone accessing the Word doc also need to
have AutoCAD Express Viewer installed? WMF's don't require additional
software.

DXF works in word. It has to be setup in the install options though....

CGM is another vector format that is popular in word.

It is also very easy for people to copy a portion of a PDF and paste it into a word file although it is raster data at that point. In Acrobat, the text select button is actually a flyout. You can toggle to graphics select, window a region and copy paste.

If you really need vector I would suggest you research HPGL/2, CGM, WMF, and DXF. Word will support many of those if all the converters (filters) are installed.

I am not sure about that. I would suspect that also, but I seem to remember trying it
with some other "insert special" (maybe volo??) and it worked if I am remembering right.

I have used HPGL in the past. There is a filter in Word. I think you
need to be careful in setting up the Print Driver for Windows so you get
the old form (not PCL) output when plotting to an HPGL file from Inventor.

If you have full blown Acrobat, you can also save a
PDF page as Encapsulated Postscript

and if the PDF file was created using Inventor
drawing plots, the postscript will be vector format.

I have done that in the past also for
catalogs

Charles is correct about HPGL, you must select a Printer/Plotter that writes
a PLT file in the HPGL language.
(HPGL/2 will not work)

I have the filter at the office used in MS Office that will allow placing
PLT files into Word. You would use
Insert - Picture - From file then browse to your PLT file(s).

If you are using Word 98 or ealier this Filter is alreayd in Word. However
from Word 2000 on Microsoft for some reason removed it. I can post or E-mail
the filter file to anyone that wants it. I will also try and post the
location of the file at the Microsoft WEB site once I find it again. That
way more of you can get the Filter quicker by downloading it yourself.

Correction, pre Word 97 had the filter. But here is the Microsoft WEB
address for the file.

Be sure to read the directions for installation.
