If you upgrade from R6, you probably won't notice a
whole lot of difference.  Most folks seem to have found R7 a bit faster and
a bit more stable than R6.  Unfortunately, there's a new bug in the sketch
constraints that's a major pain if you use the equal constraint a lot.
That one almost made me go back to R6, and for some reason it didn't get fixed
in the SP.  R7 was billed as a 'maintenence release'.  There are no
new features to speak of.  It's other major purpose was supposed to (cough)
be compatability (choke) with the latest version (gag) of Autocad.
Sorry; using the word 'compatability' in reference to Inventor and Autocad
always does that to me.

If you're coming up from R5.3 or earlier, you'll
like some of the new stuff that R6 introduced.  Don't get too excited about
the weldment feature though.  It looks good in the demo but is only about
half finished, and practically useless.

Hmmm, if you need data management for a small group of people then I suggest you upgrade and get on subscription THIS WEEK! Otherwise R7 fixed a bunch of bugs, but created some new bugs. R7 is a must have for us because drawing performance was improved and some very specific types of arrays were improved drastically.

I just upgraded from 6 and noticed the equal constraint bug. (Actually, I just posted a message about it). Does anyone have an idea when it will be fixed?

Do you already own it or would this require a cash
outlay? If you already own it and don't mind picking up some new bugs you
might want to do it (It seems more stable and faster with large
assemblies.). If you have to spend money, I'd wait and see what 8 is going to
look like and then make a decision whether or not to upgrade or move to another
design tool (after watching the news group for a few months). I have a feeling
that we aren't going to see any new service packs for 7 so we're stuck with it's
bugs unless your on subscription and will get 8 and subscription doesn't look
like that good of an investment considering what we have seen with 6, 7,
and "pro".

The other factor would be if you would like to have
acad 2004? That was really all you got from AIS7.

Good luck.

After all the complaining we did about it, we were
all pretty much floored that SP1 didn't deal with it.  Autodesk doesn't
normally say what they're working on, so there's no telling when a fix will
come.

When the equal constraint glitches, it's usually a
conflict with another constraint between the two objects (like a paralell or
perpendicular auto-constraint).  Also, if you dimension a line and then try
to apply the equal constraint, there's a much higher chance of it
failing.

If you do a lot a sheet metal then you will not
like the IDW side. The line scale was screwed up in R6 and SP1 only fix part of
the problem. The bend line are still screwed up. I my sound like a broken record
to some but then again some days I feel like I bought this software from
Staples. In fact I may have been better off buying a package from
Staples.

I completely agree about the sheet metal. I hate
all the bugs I got with 7 in sheet metal. Though I crash less but when I do it
crashes much faster than with 6sp2.

Ya,I will see what R8 is like before I move from
R6. Unless Autodesk would be kind enough to fix this awful mess with
SP2.

Man, I should have listened to the SW

I don't think that would have done you any good,
from what I've seen SW isn't any better than what we have in IV. adesk needs
to step to the plate and really lead the field. It's sad that the mid range
tools aren't better than they are by now.

How about Releasing a Mid Range pack like this
without proper line scale when it was correct in the previous releases. Is that
something you would see with SW? I understand that there are few software
companies that don't (edited) but I find this stuff far
from acceptable at this price.

I'd agree. The grass isn't greener over yonder, it just costs less.

I have to disagree, I'm putting this 15,000 parts plus in S.W. so far it has done a real nice job. and unless autodesk gets in gear and give use pro at no cost I will be making the switch

I'd like to know what it is you've seen that makes you say this. We are starting
to consider SW and would like some convincing on why IV is better.

Lets please keep the topics to Inventor. If you want to discuss other software then best
to take it to their NG.

Oh man! My company was about to distribute R7 to everyone. We are a manufacturer of sheet metal housings. That is 90% of our designs. Can someone please tell me where I can view some threads on the bugs with sheet metal in R7? Should we stick with 5.3?

As "friendly" competitors in the Lighting world,
you will most likely survive longer with 5.3 as we are with MDT6. You know our
product lines probably (Holophane) as well as I do (grinning), can you imagine
some of our castings and optics in IV any version ?

Talk about IDW shut down. I however will continue
evaluating IV since I believe it will be the package Adsk intended, I just don't
know how long it will take and now what eith the extra load of IV Pro on
developers what will slip through the cracks.

I have and still do have to suffer the price and
pains of PTC along side MDT and AutoCad. I feel for your past problems with
them.

Have a good one, Tim

My two cents is stay with IV6 get the two SP and wait for the next release if your not on subscription dont bother upgrading. As staed b4 the sketch contraints is a major pain and R7 is exactly the same as 6 in my opinon. Think the only functionality gained is with Autocad 2004 compatibility if you dont need this dont bother.

If its sheetmetal you want solidworks is not the solution. Solid Edge however is a different but more expensive option. SW touts more stability but has never offered a good sheetmetal environment.
