semi-isolated usage poll

How many of you use the semi-isolated feature of IV6?

Do you have positive results?

How many users share project data?

Do you use an additional non-shared project and design assistant to manage the project?

We use it, however not without issue.

We routinely have four people working concurrently
on a project.  We step on each others toes less often than we did prior
using this mode.
However, the mode has its
own set of inherent bugs and design shortcomings.

I usually edit the project file to drop it to a
non-shared mode (during lunch or at the end of the day) to perform DA activites
- not that this is an agreeable method.

Considering all pros and cons, from our perspective
we could take it or leave it.

We use a shared environment with around 9 users per
project and it was much nicer in R5.3

In 6 it attempts to lock down the files better and
it could not fail any more miserably

it frequently locks files to yourself (when it
crashes which is often).

So we tend to just steal any file we need as and
when it complains that we need it and it lets us (totally lame)

In case you have not got the jist 10 ou of 10
draugtsmen who expressed a prefrenc (our office obiously) said what a load of
bol**ks.

I'm using semi with one other person on a project right now. It works pretty well with a few exceptions. As an example when you do a saveas or new save you need to put the saved copy in the workgroup location, it will automatically put a copy in your workspace and check it out. If you put it in your workspace yourself you have resolve issues. I've had several problems with fillet and chamfer failures where I had to get out of semi and rebuild the parts. Then DA doesn't work in semi... And I've had issues where subassemblies are in my workspace but when I load the parent from the workgroup it loaded the older version of the sub from the workgroup instead of the current one from the workspace. Obviously a few kinks to work out.

It should only load an older version of a sub (or part for that matter) if
you have changed your project file - particularly your workspace location
and it can't find the sub.

The biggest problem I have is the fact that DA is useless while working in
semi-isolated.

I like semi isolated just because it looks after copying files to and from
my HD.

How many users share project data?

There are usually 2 people working on projects which share data at the
same time.

We never lock files and such, but yes, when we have server problems we
get lock file errors

time to time even though we do not use locks. The users are in the same
office so toe stepping

doesn't happen very often, if ever.

Yes.

It works fine for us. About the only problem I have is people not
remembering to check files back in.

We had a little trouble before SP2 in that when you created a new file in
your workspace and then tried to create the checkout on the server, the
pathing would be all screwed up. You tell it to go there, it would go here.
You had to look in the dialogue to determine where it would finally end up,
and use trial & error. If you saved directly to the server, it would
automatically create the checkout to you and work as designed. SP2 fixed
this issue for us.

If you need more than this basic file management IV provides, you should
look into a PDM system.

We use the semi-isolated environment with very good
success. We have 3 users.  It does require the users to pay more attention
to file handling than we did previously.  We are still learning/finding
little tricks that make life with IV easier.  Overall we like the
semi-isolated environment, however there are areas that would benefit from
improvement.

We use it on Assemblies of more than 10 to 20
parts and/or when we have more than 1 person working on a
project.

Even though the files sizes got smaller with
R6(backup versions in separate file) our speed was about 10+ times slower than
5.3 when using the "shared environment".  Even after we got our network
cards set for 100MB/s(Grr.. Long Story, darn IT folks) we can work much, much
faster in "semi-isolated" mode by having the workspace located on our hard
drives.

still in trial mode here. mostly useful i think. However it does not replace a true PDM and it never was meant to so don't go in thinking that is what you are supposed to get. Large assemblies become a pain becuase you cannot multi select for check out, ie you want the top level and some subs assy but not all. that part is a pain but it is better then nothing i think. ed
