resolve error

Help!

I've got a project that I began in 5.3, and I want to continue working
on it in 6. When I opened the top level assembly, there were problems
with some of my fasteners, but that didn't surprise me. I was using
redspark, and changed the way I was handling that. Anyway, I deleted
all the fastners from the browser. I saved the assembly and closed IV.
Then, I re-opened the assembly, and tried to also open the IDW.
That's my problem. The IDW won't open properly. It tells me that there
is a resolve error with the the assembly and that I have to open the
assembly to resolve it. But I already did that!

Any help is much appreciated.

Firstly did you migrate all of the files?

Possible causes:
Did you move some parts from a workspace, local or workgroup searchpath to the library or out of a library?
Does the drawing have an ipn parked between it and the assembly and if so did you load it?
Did you delete the parts from your assembly only or from disk?
Are you sure every part is listed in the search paths?
Also, can you try and go back to the original 5.3 files and try to load the drawing first?
If nothing else works try listing all the subdirectories under you workspace/workgroup/local/library search paths explicitly in your project file (yes the dreaded red paths) and see if it works that way.

I think so. I have tried to eliminate the fastners from all my old
projects since they were based on the RedSpark package, and that's no
longer being supported.

No... never thought of doing something like that. Is that how you're
supposed to handle making IDW's of moving assemblies

> Did you delete the parts from your assembly only or from disk?

I honestly don't know. I'm sure this stuff makes perfect sense to most
readers, but I can't seem to get a handle on how the libraries are
supposed to work, especially when it comes to fasteners. I did delete
them from the assemblies, but I still have a 'RedSpark' library with
stuff in it that this project points to.

> Are you sure every part is listed in the search paths?

I'm not sure what you mean by this...are you asking if each part in the
assembly lives somewhere in one of the defined paths for the project?
If that's what you mean, then yes. I just went through to check, and I
can find all the parts from the browser in either the workspace or one
of the libraries.

'fraid not..

AHH HA! -- I found my problem! I had a fastner in one of the
subassy's that didn't exist anywhere in the project paths. Thanks for
the detailed questions. They caused me to check everything carefully to
find my problem.

Thanks!

Read the Project Files Doc on your Inventor 6 CD under documentation. In
addition, you can access my class at AU this year here:
http://www.design-excellence.com/au2002/

Sounds like you need to edit your project file.
