rename part (file)

All I want to do is rename a part in an
assembly.  How in the he** do I do it?  I found that I could do it
painfully through the Design Assistant (Manage, rename file, save) but now when
I try to open the related .idw I get a "Resolve Link" dialog box. (Should I be
getting that?) So, I show it the new, renamed file, and then I get the error
"Invalid reference to segment object used" and the drawing doesn't
open.

What gives?  First, is this what I have to do
to rename a part?   And second, if I did it correctly through Design
Managar, why the errors?  Very frustrating.

Thanks.

when you rename a part you must do it at the highest level
so if you have an IDW of the assembly that is what you want to open in the Design Assistant and rename the part in the IDW file then no problems.

Boy, I wish I knew that before. I would have
thought the IAM was the highest level. Could have saved me about 15 hours of
extra work + anxiety. Does the help or manual say that anywhere?

Good sleuthing, Jiml!

The IAM is the highest level for a ipt but an IAM
can have multiple IDWs, therefore if you have an IDW in the mix you'll want to
see what file this IDW references.

I think that I managed to rename it
OK because my assembly opened without problem but the browser list did not
rename the part.

Do I have to do that
manually??

Yes, you need to rename the browser manually or you could download the
browser rename tool from my web site. I think Kent and or Sean and
others have browser rename tools on their sites as well.

One more question.

I find that if I am renaming more
than one part that I have to update the idw and save after each change in the
Design Assistant.

Is this correct or is there a way to
rename more than one part before saving?

Thanks

Rename more than one part. Use ctrl select for all renamed
parts (they will be in blue). Now check idw box. RMB find files ,if you have a lot of files in project take a break. Now copy or update idw files.
