problem deriving a part

I am trying to derive a part and also bring over the features. The part that will be the mirror part has most of the features of the original, and I simply wanted to delete the features not used. Is this possible?

I don't believe you can.
The only thing I can suggest is, make the base part the one with the fewer features, than make a derived part from that and add the additional features to it.

you can always supress the features you don't want on the derived part.

if i do that, then when I unsupress the original it will mess up the derived, (I have to keep the link)

You should be able to delete the surfaces with the
heal on and the extra features will be gone.

don't supress the features on the main part at all.

after you derive the main part supress the features

you don't want on the derived part in the derived part file

not the main part.

seems like that should work.

Your workflow seems back-to-front to me

I'll try to describe this in a simple way.

Can you not have one parent part? (e.g.part1.ipt).

In that parent part have just your base features,
say, an extruded circle.

Then use that part to derive two new parts

Use Part1.ipt to derive Part2.ipt and put fillets on it,
(ie the features you have in your complete part)

Use Part1.ipt top derive Part3.ipt and put other features on
it.

You will have to strip out (suppress\delete) the features on
your parent part down to the state that is acceptable for your new part, but you
could use copy and paste from the original to recreate the
features.

Sorry if this is not clear, but I guess you are asking for a
wish. That is to be able to suppress Part features in the derived part
dialogue.

I have had that wish a few times myself. There is cases where it would
be very handy.

If it was not already logged, it is now.

Why not convert the source part into a custom iPart factory so that you can
use the "configuration technique" I have described before? This way, I
believe, you can effectively achieve what you want. I agree that it requires
an extra step, but it offers much more since you can change any parameters
as well.

Lloyd,
I just tried it and the features don't appear in the derived part - it's
basically a dumb solid that's linked to the parent part.

Hi Udaya

To be very honest, the whole process seems a little too convoluted to me especially for
such a simple need. Also I don't think I have fully grasped the "configuration technique"
and consequently have avoided using it. I suppose I really should take the time to
understand it better. 8^)
