placing assembly constraints

is inventor (edited) or am i missing something.
I usally use MDT and am trying to use inventor but am getting really
frustrated in trying to to add constraints. In MDT i can pick a feature and
then tell it explicitly what type of constraint I need ( as long as its
possible) for example I am trying to constrain a series of plates with
holes. in IV I have to hover over the hole, wait for the select other box
(or RMB) to be able to cycle through the options and in a crowded assembly
this is difficult and most of the time I cannot even cycle to the axis
constraint which is what I need. Another thing I can do in MDT is move the
two parts off the assembly ( even if they are constrained ) then constrain
the features I need constrained. Can anyone who has also used MDT offer some
advice because this is the third time i've tried to make the move to IV but
each time I try I find that ecomomically it is not viable to make the change
as it seem to be so much slower to navigate through.

regards

Shane

As long as you try to use MDT commands in Inventor you will have problems.
All of the things you mention you can do in MDT can be done just as easily
in Inventor.

Try using the Inventor tutorials to learn Inventor. Talk to your employer
about a training class.

Finally a quote from Lynn Allen:

The Inventor Mantra:
Inventor is not AutoCAD!

.Inventor is not based on AutoCAD
.Inventor does not look like AutoCAD
.Inventor does not function like AutoCAD
.Inventor will be offended if you compare it to AutoCAD.

Couple of suggestions....

1) Kill the "select other" (set delay to 0) and go straight to rmb.

2) Invest in a spaceball. Minimum investment is about $35 on eBay if you'll
keep an eye open for them. IV has native support and it's superb, almost
faultless (pesky dynamic highlighting, but there are ways to avoid the
problem). Big time saver.

You can use the move tool to move constrained components, though it's not
transparent during a constraint operation and I wish it were.

I personally consider putting together an assembly in MDT a struggle compared
to IV (used MDT exclusively v2 thru 6). I do think you have a valid gripe
concerning hole axes. Axes seem to be on the bottom of the priority list for
circular /cylindrical objects or when picking thru multiple objects using the
mate constraint (and the measure tool) and I can't figure out why that should
be. Axes are also filtered when the flush constraint is active, you can't
select them. If you can use the insert constraint, it's filtering and feature
recognition are really good; very fast and easy to use.

Good luck with it,
Jeff

Jeff

How are you getting rid of the dynamic highlighting with the spaceball? This
really is annoying in a large assemblies. I have a couple of things that
help but nothing that I really like.

Give us a technique. TIA

Hi, Greg.

The one I use the most is just to initiate the orbit tool and leave it on. I
especially like this because I can pick the rotation center as I go flying
into a close view of something or shift focus to another extremity of the
assembly. It will also clear the "pre select" highlight without having to
back out so a clear area is visible should you accidentally let it tag you.

The other is to rmb on the panel bar and get the "expert" tag up. This will
disable the highlighting while it's active.

Just FYI; in DA clicking the Help menu will disable the very annoying cursor
tool tips until you click something in the graphics area.

If you've got some to add I'd love to hear 'em. 8~) I realize the
developers have a tough job putting this all together, but sometimes I feel
like I'm in an X-File; "Fight the Feature".

Have a good one,
Jeff

Jeff

Thanks, those are great tips, maybe Sean & Drew will add them to their tips
and tricks if they aren't already in there. Thanks again.

Gregg

Just say no to bloat ware.
