perform subtract boolean operation on two separated solids in inventor 2012

Hello!

I´m new in this forum! I´m also quite newbie in inventor. I have inventor 2012 and I´m having trouble doing a cut boolean operation to two solids. One is a revolved elipse, so it´s a kind of egg, and the other one is an extruded rectangle.

I want to cut the egg in the rectangular solid, so I can obtain a rectangular solid with an empty egg space inside. I tried to use the "derived" command, so I derived the egg from the rectangular solid, and used the combine command, but with no success.

Right now I have two separated solids on the same file (the egg and the extruded rectangle).

If you could explain me the steps needed in order to do this, I would appreciate very much!

regards,

Hugo Silva

There are several different techniques to do this.

The best one to use depends on your design intent.

Attach your ipt files here.

If you are trying to create a single part from scratch then you need one sketch, one extrusion and one revolve.

In sketch draw length and height of rectangle also draw half ellipse with centreline along length.

Extrude midplane width and select all areas in the sketch.

Share the sketch.

Revolve ellipse as cut selecting only the half ellipse.

If you have existing parts you can use sculpt.

Hi!

Thanks for the replies!

I´m attaching the .ipt file. Right now I have the egg and the extruded rectangle separated.

You might start with this document  http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/skillsusa%20university.pdf

then explain a bit about your end goal.

Hello,

Thanks for all the help. I figured out a way to do what I want to do.

I do a rectangle and extrude the midplane, then on the top surface I design an elipse and revolve it, but using cut. So I have half of my part right now. I use the mirror feature and mirror the part I have, so I will have the entire part right now!

Thanks very much to all of you!

regards,

Hugo Silva
