how to move many parts at a time

how do I move more than one part at a time?
Can you move parts from one point to another known point?
Also is there a way to count the number of parts in an assy file? Thanks

Easiest way to move parts is to constrain. Use offset to get the correct
placement. You can then delete (or suppress) constraint to release the degree of
freedom.

There is a couple of utility's to count parts. I think the Bom Extractor program from
Charles site would work www.cbliss.com or the iStatistics program at Patrick's site

Thanks for the info
So I guess there is no 'select' 'window' to be able to move more than one at a time? Since I have a lot of parts not constrained but in the correct orientation to each other it will be time consuming to move them? What about moving them to a sub assy, than moving the sub assy? Is there a way to put multiple parts into a subassy at the same time?

Yes. Select them all (using Ctrl-pick, no window), then hitting Tab (or
RMB-->Demote). Constraints of sub-ass'y will be kept, but not to main ass'y.
Afterwards, you can then hit Shift-Tab and they will promote back to main
assembly.

sure, use control or shift to multi select them in the browser and then just drag and drop
them into the sub.

They will maintain constraints between themselves, but will loose constraints to any part
not getting added to the sub.

If you are trying to work by not using constraints in Inventor then I think you are going
to be fighting a tough battle.

Thanks again
Kent, not that I want to make unconstrained assy, but what I am tring to do is make a big assy to test my hardware and also work with a STEP file 30 mb from UG and Solidworks, parts have moved out of place and need to be realigned.

Fred

Didn't even recognize your name until now. If I had earlier, I wouldn't have made the
statement about constraints. 8^)

Good luck with the project.

"parts have moved out of place and need to be realigned."

Ground all the parts of the assy except for what you need to move and then apply constraints to relocate the unaligned parts. Grounding the correctly located parts will keep them from moving during the constraining process.

Don't feel bad Kent, it has been a while since you have heard from me (MDT 6) and we are still new with IV and still waiting for our first training. I am not sure how much I like IV when it takes 45 min. to load a 30 mb STEP file and then 2 hours to make a dwg view! good thing I have dual processor (PIII 550) and 1 gb ram---still not fast. Thanks for the help. Fred
