convert Inventorfile to stl

I've converted a Inventormodel with the exportfunktion in a stl-file.

This morning I get the Model produced with a SLS (Laser-Synther) and it was ca 2,54x the size it should have...
So they said the lenght must have been converted to inch...

Then I convert a file to stl and then to a step it seems that it becomes in every conversation 2,5x the size....

So what's the matter?

Please excuse my bad style (I'm from Germany).
I hope sombody can help me.

With friendly regards,

Holger

hi, can i ask if you had set your units to metric mm, or is it set to imperial inches?

via options in tools, document settings

if it was imperial & you need to swap over to metric, then you will have to edit the dimensions and type mm after the value to make it the correct size.

best regards,
- Mark

Hi sholger,

I think you can click the Options button when saving out the STL file and set the *.stl units to match your document units.

Note that this has changed over the years, so if you don't see the option it might be due to the version of Inventor you're using (I seem to recall a bug with this in earlier versions).

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,

I have reimported the stl file to check:
it says, that the file is metric...

Hi sholger,

To clarify, I think you'll need to re-save the file as an STL and use the Options button to ensure the units are set correctly:

I hope this helps.

Which program did you use?

Or how do you get the dialog save copy as?

I'm confused...

Greetings

Holger

Hi sholger,

From within Autodesk Inventor

Select Save AsSave Copy As, then use the Options button shown previously.

Also see this link:

Export parts and more

look for the STL File Save As Options

I hope this helps.

It has been reported here many time (a search might turn up previous threads) that the Options>Units must be set on saving stl files.

Unfortunately it has also been reported here (a search might turn up previous threads) that Inventor Import of stl cannot be relied on as a check of size as Inventor does not import the files correct units in some cases.

There are other software programs that can be used to verify the geometry size.

The best bet is to indicate to the person who will run the job what the bounding box size for the part should be.
