buttress threads...

i have a standard 16 tpi buttress external thread. does anyone know the
PROPER callout for this thread type? for example, on the drawing do i say
"BUTTRESS THREAD, CLASS 1, 16 TPI, L.H. PITCH"?

thanks,

Think you should include the diameter but I call them out same way I call
out other threads: 1 1/2-16 BUTRESS LH. Worked so far. Haven't seen a
standard on it though. If it's different in a standard, someone will correct
me I'm sure.

Hi, Mark.

Have you got a Machinery's Handbook handy? It gets a little complicated (at
least for me).

Basic is 2.5-8 BUTT-2A for 2.5 dia, 8 tpi, class 2, but there's more (push /
pull, flat root, multiple start, LH, etc.) If you just want to tag the LH to
what you've got it would be -2A-LH

...ok. what page is that on. my book is the #25 edition...

so far i have 3/4-16 BUTTRESS, CLASS 1, L.H. i think i'm satisfied with that
but i wonder if there is a 2A or 2B designation also.

Yeah, forgot the class didn't I. Should have check MHB first, I guess, since
your example is the same as listed there ... now that I have looked. I could
have used it to. Duh! I use them on Hyd. Cyls. mostly.

1345 in MHB 21, but it's under "Buttress Thread Designations" in the
Buttress Thread section.

The -2A mentioned gives the class and indicates external (A) or internal
(B). I also am used to seeing the class at the end of the callout, like
.25-20UNC-2A.
