breaking links in idw's

Revisions... part mods... we are trying to come up with a good method for
accounting for part modifications and revisions.... (I would like to hear
some of you guys ideas and suggestions on the matter) .... First of all ...
we are just a small 20 person company that designs, and builds custom
machinery, mainly for the automotive industry.... 3 designers... here is
what we are doing now.... the prints are issued to the shop, if there is a
modification... the designer updates the original ipt, then adds a rev
number to the ipt, chk marks the eng approval date and initials eng approved
by, then goes to the idw, makes any necessary dim fixes(the idw titleblock
reflects the rev info) and prints the dwg. Find the original dwg and staple
to the back of the new dwg and write OLD on the dwg. At the end of the job,
take all stapled-old prints out of the shops part prints and put them into
the office job folder for reference purposes. One of the other designers
has a problem with the fact that the original idw is no more, other than the
paper copy. What i was wondering as a fix for that... is there a way that
before you make a modification(other than something minor) you could make a
new rev idw file and copy the idw sheet that you are about to modify into
that new file, then somehow freeze or break the link on the original idw
sheet so it retains its original version and does not update with the part
mods?? Our idw's usually contain 25 sheets, so just a move of the old part
print to a folder that is outside of the project locations doesn't really
work well. Is there a way to do this or does someone have suggestions for a
better method alltogether.
thanks,
bl

I am not sure if the Vault would work for a 20 person team or not?? , but you might look
into it. It automatically saves old versions for you.

Brian,

Under Tools>Document settings-click Defer Updates. The IDW will no longer follow the changing IPT. When you make modifications, open the IDW, "save copy as" to the new rev level. Open the new IDW, unclick Defer Updates, and the views change to show the new features. When you leave that IDW, be sure to click Defer Updates again to preserve the current status.

Please note that this will not work if you change the file name of the IPT when you modify it, because the IDW will still look for the old part.

Hope this helps.

Tom
