Will opening IV5 files in 5.3 migrate aut.?

Hi NG

I have a large assembly made in IV5. Now someone here have opened this
assembly in IV5.3 and the result is that we can't open any parts or
subassemblies in IV5!
Question#1: Will the opening of the top-(IV5)assembly in IV5.3 result in
automatic migration of all files to 5.3?

We still have IV5 on one computer but if this project is pure 5.3 now, then
we might just drop IV5.

Question#2: Will the latest edition of Inventor allways be able to open any
older version file?

No, the files will not be "migrated" until you migrate them or "rebuild all"
all the parts. If saved in 5.3, though, they will no longer be accessible in
5.0. If the files are opened in 5.3 and closed without saving, they will
still be accessible in 5.0.

Theoretically, but keep backups of the old versions in case it can't. There
are occasional problems. Also, it's probably safe to say that trying to open
a project that was last saved several versions prior is inviting problems.

You have 5.0 and 5.3? I would back up your 5.0 files making sure that all
your project errors / paths are good. Then migrate your projects into 5.3
one at a time till you have confidence in 5.3 all SP's loaded of course. 5.3
is and was regarded as very stable, some have also gone back to 5.3 after
6.0 but they are in the minority I believe? 5.3 is the way to go IMO if
your not thinking on getting your working files into 5.3 then start all new
jobs in 5.3 at least. My 2p
