When does "Save" = "Save Copy As"?

Answer: Randomly.

I have found several instances when I edit a component in a sub-assembly,
finish editing and then hit the Save Icon, Inventor tries to do a "Save Copy
As". I know this because it tells me the file already exists - then I look
at the title on the dialog window and it says "Save Copy As". I cancel out
and hit the Save Icon again and everything saves just fine.

Weird and unrepeatable.

I have seen this a 2 or 3 times on my system.

it happened to me when I tried to "save" .idw file
too.  I already made some changes so I want to save it over the existing
one - Won't let me do that. To save me changes, I have to "save copy as" to
diff. name, close it, delete the existing one, and save it over.

The Save command will morph into the Save Copy As when your file is
read-only.

If you say that it happens randomly, is there something on your system that
can set your files "read-only"?

Maybe a PDM system that has some of your Inventor files
checked-in?

Ditto on Bob's comment - this is very common when
Inventor doesn't have write access to a file - check:

1) Read only attributes

2) Permission to modify

Hope this helps.

I have had this problem when importing MDT
files.  The import will come in fine.  I will try to save the first
time to a location and am told that the file already exists and I cannot save
over an open file???  That was the weirdest one I found.

That happens to me every time but I am used to it.
Once you import from MDT, you need to check if it already has been saved and if
so, close it and open the saved file and edit it.

I did check and it did not exist in any
directory.  I could not save the file under the name it was imported under
and had to change the name.  I could then copy to the original name or
rename perfectly fine.

I have no PDM system. I'm a Stand-alone computer. It happens on my
notebook and on my home workstation. No network file access.

Any other ideas? Just a Windows thing?

Not "read only" or "PDM". Once I closed the file
(without save) and reopen, then it works ok. I believe it's a BUG !!!!
