The New PhoneBooks here! (The Vault)

OK maybe that reference was a bit esoteric but for those of you who saw the movie "The Jerk" I'm excited like Steve Martin was when running around yelling about the new phone book.

Subscription members can now log in and download "The Vault" which is the major new functionality you received with R7. Better late than never!

Maybe some feel it is worthless but the vault is more important to our business than accurate dwg in and out. It is certainly welcome functionality for us.

Thanks Brian

For some reason it didn't even dawn on my that I could check both at
once. For some reason I was thinking they were radio buttons rather
than check boxes.

I will have to play with it tomorrow and see I can get it to work.

We were thinking about getting a new one set up but we wanted to see what
the traffic is like first - we might if it there are a lot of questions.

I will take this as a vote for "yes" to a vault news group!

For those of you who don't know, Brian Roepke, who has posted info in this thread is, well, basically, the father of the Vault. He came over from TruEinnovations to continue to develop and implement the Vault into Inventor. He's new to this group, so treat him fairly so that he will continue to aid many of us in the use of the Vault. Mike@RTSWright.

Hey if they split up R6 & R7 then I say make a new one for the Vault also.

Or you could use the legacy group. No one would notice

I notice in the readme file stating the OS requirements are Windows 2000
Server SP3 for the server. The server we have here has NT Server 4.0 SP6 OS.
So will vault work with it or do we have to upgrade the OS? Also will it
make any difference if the server has 128 MB of RAM while the recommend
minimum is 256 MB? That makes it two things that needs upgrading. I don't
know if I can do that since we are kinda on budget around here.... Please
advice...

My reseller told me that we need Microsoft SQL which has a free version which limits you to 750,000 records and every check in or check out is a record. He felt for what we do that we'd get into trouble in the future. He said we should buy the SQL verion that has unlimited records (limited to your hardware). I don't think it's a sales pitch, but can anyone confirm what he said.

Thanks!

Yes the Vault runs on a SQL server.  When you
install the Vault, if you select server during the install, it will install MSDE
(Microsoft Desktop Engine).  MSDE is a free scaled-down version of MS SQL
Server which should be sufficient for a small business/department.

The vault server software will not run on Windows NT server 4. Only Win2k.
There are components we use for the server that aren't supported on NT. The
client software will work on a NT box, like Inventor.

I think I should not as well that you don't need a windows 2000 server box
for the "server" Windows 2k professional works fine.

You can continue to use the tools that you already
have in place - Inventor doesn't require the vault to run.  Just don't
install it.  Two vaulting systems on one box wouldn't work all that
well.

Correct - MS allows us to let you have the scaled
down version of SQL for free.  A great way to get started for a littler
larger group (+10 users) or most likely more than enough.

As far as what your VAR told you isn't really isn't
100% accurate.  the MSDE engine is limited to 2GB of meta data.
Metadata = iProperties, Custom Properties, Parent child relationships,
etc.  But not the files.  How fast you get to the 2 GB of data is
grossly dependant on your data and how much text we pull out of the files when
they are added to the vault.
