Still crashing IV 6 frequently.

I have been reading/searching the IV6 Group to find solutions. We added memory (768MB), did a clean reinstall of XP, updated IV6, MDT6 and Office XP to most recent SP and updates. Changed memory settings to "System chache".
Installed NVIDIA Quadro4 550 XGL with Driver .40.72.
Disabled NAV and no other software is installed or running in background. Did a rebuild all on each assembly. All work is done in Semi-Isolated Projects.
IV6 is still crashing, when constraining large sub assemblies to each other (250-500 each) and frequently during saving.
No error messages, just shuts down! Anybody have any idea what else we can try?!?!?! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Peter (peterd@bigskyeng.com)

"We added memory"

Is your new memory the exact same as your old memory. Mismatching memory types and sometimes even brands can cause errors.

Is it crashing only on this one assy? How does it behave when you're not working on this assy?

The best way to track a problem like this is to format the HD, remove any unnecessary hardware from the computer, do a clean reinstall of the OS, update the OS and hardware, install IV (and IV only). Then start using IV for a day and see what happens. If it still crashes then you know it's more hardware/OS related as compared to any other program conflict. If IV does run well then you can slowly start adding hardware and software. If IV starts crashing again then you'll have a better idea as to what is causing the problem.

don't forget to install excell

If I remember right you CAN run IV without Excel but lose the functionality of any part of IV that uses Excel. But yes, I would suggest installing Excel as well before running IV for a day. Office wouldn't be a problematic software for IV to run with (of course).

Thanks Tracey.

Three 256MB modules. Purchased thru Dell to match existing module type and
brand.

This is happening on two different PC's, working on two different
Assemblies/Projects.
Almost identical PC Hardware (except 1x 1.7GHZ; 1x 2.0GHZ), one is a clean
slate OS,
the other has a variety of Software installed. Both have same problem.

Been thru the Format and reinstalling twice. Have never tried it with only
IV installed.
Will have to do this as last resort. We are adding more memory to increase
RAM and
swapping video card from another PC without problems.

Can anyone recommend particular update/SP's for XP to avoid or must haves?!

Thanks a bunch.

Are you having frequent crashes with other IV files?

I guess RAM shouldn't be your problem then unless you just happen to have received a bad stick.

One of my guys was crashing 4 to 6 times a day when
constraining.  We de-selected the preview option in the constraint dialogue
box and his problems went away.

Already doing that. No change in IV behavior. Still
crashing.

Thanks anyway. Keep them coming. I'm still hoping
for that one "MAGIC" button or option to

click and everything is working the way it is
supposed to.

Try nvidia driver 41.03 or 41.09. Might make the diff. Seems like there
have been more problems with 40.72 than these. Try 41.09 first as it is
more optimized for winxp.

There is a new one. 4345. Not yet certified, but works great. Only thing is, you
should change the Application Options to SolidWorks .

SOLIDWORKS ???? Is that what you said? Couldn't hear you whispering!
He said SOLIDWORKS, doesn't that kind of talk get you kicked out of this
board?

I'll wait and see, if the 42.01 makes any difference first, before updating
to the latest.

Thanks. Peter

Only if you talk favorably towards IT. You can bash IT all you want. Or at least until Anne says "that's enough". 😉

Actually, I was told it was "set to anything but Inventor" but Inventor
isn't one of the options anyway. Of late, I have been setting to
Unigraphics or SolidEdge. We are having problems with the 4072 driver
on XP with the /3GB patch installed so I have been playing with the
4201 driver which seems stable.
