Speeding up IDW's - How To

One of my customers was having problems trying to open up idw's.

He had a number of systems P4 1.8 - 2.4 with 1GB ram, and nvidia 700's and
Wildcat 760's. Win 2000 with SP's

It was taking in excess of 1 1/2 hours to open his IDWs on the GA

We tried the same project file here at our office, and to open the file was
66 seconds on a P4 3 Ghz with 1GB, and an nvidia 4200, and about 7 minutes
to open the GA

This was not performance.

Thanks to PNY for supplying a demo board. FX 1000. They came through in a
pinch.

We set up another 3 Ghz system with XP Sp1, 2 GB Ram, and the FX 1000, and a
40 GB HD with 8 MB cache.

Project file opened in 15 seconds.

IDW with all hidden lines 1 minute 45 seconds.

In his words, they were shocked.

Sure ends a lot of frustration.

Good information, thanks for sharing. Were the files always being opened from a local drive? What is GA?

In this case a local drive. General
Assembly

BTW, the PNY FX 1000 is a great card, but it has
its own power supply connection at the end of the card. So- you'll have to use
of of the power supply connections for power, and make sure that you beef up the
power supply.

In my estimation, the results were the result of
having sufficient ram, CPU, and Video. It was not just the result of having the
new video card in the system.

Clone system with Intel MB P865. If I was going to
buy this, I would probably put in a dual capable MB.

Between the two 3GHz systems was there a difference in FSB speed?

Was the project pack'n'go'd to you? if so was structure preserved. If it was
flattened i can see the majority of performance coming from there and the
original person after adding gobs of ram and expensive new video cards not
realizing what gains he saw at your place. That might end the end of the
frustration 😉

yes- used pack'n'go on the original project file with structure intact.

We'd been down that path before. But all I did was set up system for him,
and deliver it to him as a trial. He connected to his network, and the
project that he had been working on was opened, and he has been
experimenting ever since, and finally filled me in on his results.

Also this system used DDR 400 Ram 800 FSB at $115.00 Cdn dollars per 512 MB,
so for $230 plus GST and PST, he's much happier with the outcome, but he is
also going to put the 700 nVidia into the new system to see if it is really
the new video card.
