Sketch will not offset

Inventor 2011 will not offset polygon in sketch mode.  I get "Method not supported for transient meta" error message.  How do I fix this problem?  Or what am I doing wrong?

I don't have 2011, but it works fine in 2013. Why don't you post the part file here so I (or someone else) can take a look at it?

Select offset, right-click a line, make sure loop select is checked. If you still have the problem attach the ipt and i'll take a look since am running 2011 and can offset polygons or any shape just fine.

left off constraints to show offset lines easier.

Possibly in the Offset, a segment of the line is becomming small enough to that it can no longer exist. This could be the problem as well.

As Blair remarked that is one of the most common problems. Did you make the polygon manually or use the polygon shape tool?

i just had this happen about 2 minutes ago on a simple circle of all things, using inv 2014.

i had to restart inventor and now it is fine.

btw, i have never ever seen this error before now. i was about to post and see if it was a new bug but saw someone else with the same issue on inv 2012 so i cancelled the post, to then see this one running.

best regards,
- Mark

Polygon shape tool was used.

Had that happen to me before with projected geometry, but at the time was new to Inventor so just thought it was me. Of course since then have done it many times without any problems, so expect its just one of those rare occurrances that glitch out.

drafdog, have you tried making a new polygon and offsetting it in a completely new sketch? Just to see if it works or not?

Why haven't you attached the ipt file here?

The ipt is part of an exercise in a training text. There are accompanying
files which hold the sketches. I opened their version of the sketch and the
function performed properly. Have no idea what a "transient meta" might be.
"Meta" is not a word, but a prefix meaning (if memory serves) "beyond." I
hate it when code writers pretend to reinvent the English language. Why are
they reluctant to find the correct word? Are they really that lazy?

I am lost.

What happens if you

1. start a new file

2. create a polygon

3. try to offset the polygon

Does it work or not?

Repeatedly deleted the polygon and tried to offset new instance to no avail.

so why can't you

1. start  a new file

2. create a polygon

3. attach the file here?

Used the shape tool.
Does anyone know what a "meta" is?

I am not familiar with the "shape" tool.  Can you attach a screen capture here?

drafdog, download the attached file and let me know if you can offset any of the shapes, or cant for that matter. Trying to figure out if your sketch is perhaps corrupted or something different.

Where are you getting "meta" from? What does it have to do with offsetting a sketch entity?

That's the error they get, why? We don't know yet 🙂 See the attachment from mark_W on page 1
