Sheet Metal Part - Rip command or extrude

Good Day All,

 

I have attached a sheet metal part (2014 .ipt) and am having issues trying to use the rip command, maybe my understanding of the rip command is unclear, and I should probably just create a sketch and extrude a slit.

 

Using the image below as a reference,

 

What I want to do is to create a rip or slit from P1 to P2, which will give me face C.

After this rip, I want to bend face C at P1 so that it is parallel to face A, leaving face B at its current state.

(the construction lines are from the existing frame that this will be welded to.)

 

My 2 solutions are to create this slit using the extrude command then fold,

 

or to cut face C out completely and add a flange to that cut edge.

 

I am just curious why the rip command is not letting me create a slit from P1 to P2.

From Help:

 

  • Point to Point - Allows the definition of a Rip feature through the selection of a face to rip and two points along edges of the face. The points you select can be work points, midpoints on edges, endpoints on face vertices, or sketched points from a previously created sketch.

Looks like you'll need to cut a slot.

Yup!

 

Rip Tool- very useful, but very limited??

 

Thanks for the clarification, I created a sketch, cut a slit and now I have my part..I'll attach it, maybe someone has a better way to create this part..

Here's another way, though I don't know if it's any better or easier.

I initially tried to create this part this way, but the issue I ran into was, I had a critical dimension which was to hard to control by adding a flange or bend where you created the FACE3, I needed the height to be 11.4375" (11 7/16") or under, by adding that FACE3, you have to play with the sketch until you get the desired height. Which is doable, just didn't want to mess around with that. So in my part, the first contour flange feature controls that critical dimension.

Did you calculate these dimension (red circles)? or are they driven somehow?

The others are just arbitrary, since I don't know your design requirements

Was wondering how I can enter an eqution to calculate dimensions based on delta x's and y's
