Your sketch has to be on a flat surface (not a work plane) or use unfold / refold.

SO YOU CAN NOT DO THIS ON A CYLINDER BECAUSE THERE IS NO FLAT SURFACE?

What I need is to put a rectangular hole thru half on the attached cylinder

I extrude the geometry and thicken/offset than converted to sheet metal

the geometry came from a model that I need this part to match to I was trying to

avoid making the lay flat & folding

Hi Jerry,

you should have a look at the "Contour Flange" feature. This is the right tool to start with. It is always useful to just work with the options offered in the sheet metal environment this way you can ensure that the part will be able to unfold. Ones you build your base part, unfold it and create the desired cut fold it again and you will have the desired part.

I hope that this explanation helps
