Removing A Part Created In An Assembly

I've created a part in an assembly and designed it around other components so there are assembly features like extrusions, holes, etc. that exist on the part in the assembly only.  How do I take this newly created part and extract it from the assembly while keeping all of the features that exist in the assembly?
