Project Files for Idiots

I've been using Inventor since version 3.x (closer to 4), and I am still
clueless as to proper setup of Projects. Totally Clueless! Has anyone
created a simple chart showing setup for workgroup search path vs.
workspace, library search paths, local search paths? Type of Project
(Personal Workspace for Group Project or New Project (personal of group))?
I know I'm not the only one. Has anyone created a "Projects for Dummies"
booklet? I've followed along with a tutorial (do this, then do this, then
do this), but it doesn't fully explain the rational. HELP ME - - - PLEEZE!
(said the fly with the human head at the end of original movie "The Fly").

Look on the IV CD in the documentation folder for the white paper
"Autodesk Inventor 7 File Management.doc". A very comprehensive work,
and thoroughly captivating reading material (significant sarcasm intended).

Mark,

In it's simplest form a Project (.ipj) is simply a text file (you can open
them-even edit them- in notepad or Word) that contains directory path
information so IV can "look" at the Project and "see" where your parts,
assemblies, and drawings live.

If you blank out before getting to the end of the white paper that Hal
mentioned, be sure to post back to clarify any issues that are still hanging
you. I cannot stress how important the proper setup and understanding of
Projects are to the success of running Inventor.

I would also urge you to get Patrick de Stobbeleir's Project File Organizer
which, just by using this remarkably simple tool, should give you a better
hands-on understanding.

Yes Hal. I tried reading that once upon a time, lost my attention, never
went back to it. O.K. - I'll try it again. Last time I printed it out in
grayscale. This time in color - hope it can hold my attention better.
Perhaps I'll have an epiphany over the weekend. Thanks.

Mark

I found that short stints was the most successful approach to finishing
the paper. The color copy really helps also. I'll stop here before I
get into trouble for any more reading suggestions.

The thing that really helps me with patents is to rewrite the claims using my own terminology in place of the terms used in the patent. That might help Mark as well, and find/replace in a wordprocessor makes it fairly simple.

here's a couple of articles from Cadence that might help, they are a bit
easier to read than the white paper, maybe help as a precursor. Just ignore
my coffee stains.

Hi Mark,
Can I be an idiot too!
IMO There is little point Autodesk giving us a white paper which I like
most, I recon, found hard to follow.
When their samples project has "nested paths"? or is it me and my funny set
up.........
What we idiots/ idiot needs is some simple example projects we can browse.
This for most users only need the default project...............well is that
how most handle projects.
Laurence with is over opinionated hat on :^)

Anne -

I created the original of this thread, and there was no attached file.
Something got crossed in the twilight zone, as I see you reference a file
from Mark S. Klein.

Mark

Anne was saying the post that Mark had made (his original, she had a
copy of his text in her post) was moved since it had a PDF attachment.

Two Mark names might have confused the issue. Mark Klein posted a file on Friday
7:40PM Eastern USA time. That was the file that was moved.

http://www.design-excellence.com/ftp Look for my project file paper
from last years AU. Read it first, then the big paper on the Inventor 7
CD under documentation.
