Problems with projecting face

One of the reasons I have never had much success with adaptive parts is in
INV 5.3 I could never get the project command to roject a face. For some
reason it would only project edges. So I just tried this in INV6 and to my
excitment the face highlighted and then when I selected it I get this
message:

i:Project Face: problems encountered while executing this command.

Any ideas? I am in an assembly file and create a new part and select a face
which brings up a new sketch then I try to project faces from any parts and
get this....

You can only project face from other part if CPGP is selected, if it is not
then you can project face using "project cut edges"with new part sketch but
it will not adapt. In 5.3 I believe it is the same.
Is CPGP on or off?

OK in CS files I have put a screen shot of my assembly tab and
the error and
the problem assm. Can someone take a look at this for me its
drivin me
totally nuts (not far to drive).

Open cab floor mount assm.iam

Activate cab mount vert plate

Make a sketch on the front face of the plate where the plate with
the holes
meets it.

Try to project the face from the end of the C-Section sheetmetal
bit I get
the error and I cant seem to project faces EVER???

To be honest I have never seen Inventor project a face of another
part
through all my time using it and I am begining to think its a
myth...

Got it Thanks Chuck.....

Brian,

Yes, we did get a chance to look into this. The problem is that the part
you are using is "adaptive" in some other assembly.
Projecting a face from another part uses adaptivity. You are only allowed
to have one instance of an adaptive part. This does make
sense (from our perspective) since having multiple instances be adaptive
would require that a given part have more than one representation.

If you did NOT intend for this part to be adaptive in any other assembly,
you should turn off its "awareness" of already being adaptive in some other
assembly so that you CAN make it adaptive in the assembly you are currently
working on. You can do this by going to the Tools|Document Settings|Model
dialog and turn it off.

If you did want it to be adaptive in another assembly, the only option you
have is to do a save Copy As and replace the current part with the copy.

Hope this helps.

Chuck

I wonder if it would be possible to have an error message indicate what the
problem is? This would have driven me nuts, too.

On a side note, I noticed that even though I have [enable cross part assoc
proj's] off, the faces of other parts in the assembly were selectable for
projection, which shouldn't be.
---------------------

Brian, I don't know if it's any help for you (and you are probably aware of
it); I think it's a consensus that it's best to keep the functionality turned
off and use to make the projections associative when desired.

Jeff,

I have been told that dialog should be edit to be a little more descriptive
in a future release. Now that I have it working I guess I have to look at
how I am gonna use it. It would seem the control click thingy sounds like it
would be ok. So let me get that clear..
If ECPG is off and you project a face you get pink edges which are not
associative?
IF ECPG is off and you ctrl+slect you get associative edges?

Confused, you betcha

Confused... me, too. There have been some changes with 6 and
I didn't really have a handle on cross part projection in 5, but if I
understand correctly...

With ECPG off, you cannot even select a face of another part, but only edges.
{I found your assembly odd in that respect and can only suspect it is a bug,
along with the cross part projection of silhouette edges coming up black
instead of pink (they are not associative), but let's not worry about that as
it will only confuse matters.} The projected entities should be magenta /
pink, are not associative and create no "Reference" attached to the sketch.
CTRL+Select will allow the selection of faces or edges on other parts and they
should project as black entities, be associative and create a "Reference"
nested under the sketch (the same behavior that should occur if ECPG is on).

Also, keep in mind that there are limitations with regard to the relationship
of the part being edited to the assembly. I don't remember the specifics, but
I that it's not possible to do an associative projection from a part
that is in a higher assembly or in parallel assemblies. I think of the
assembly as a tree with the trunk being the top level assembly and forking
branches being successively deeper layers of sub assemblies. Given that, it
should be possible to project from an entity that is in the same branch or
closer to a limb tip, but not the other way around. Again, I'm not that
familiar with the functionality, so may be incorrect.

Have a good one,
Jeff

Jeff, I think the posts are screwed at my end anyway, Projected faces are
now Black it appears in 6.0 Project Cut Faces are Pink still. Chuck said
go to tools document settings modelling tab Adaptivity used in Assembly. Did
you get that bit.
