Print Problem - Dashes Disappear

When I print, my lines all become very thin. My main problem is that dashed lines (hidden lines, center lines, threads, etc) are printed the same as all other lines, making the drawing impossible to understand. I noticed that the border and title block also gets thinned.

This is clearly visible in Print Preview, as well as on the actual paper. I'm using IV prof.11, with HP LaserJet 1320 PS driver. It also happens when I try to print to CutePDF. Anyone ever seen this before?

Any ideas of how to get my dashed lines back?

Thank you for your thorough response. I followed your instructions, and replaced one of the two "Object Defaults" Styles, and then tried thickening my visible lines.

However, the change was not reflected in my display, despite having "Show Line weights" checked in App.Options->Drawing.

The thickened lines are displayed for brief flashes at random intervals, and for a few milliseconds when I drag a view across the sheet and set it in another location.

This behavior is the same whether I use my pre-existing drawing and styles, when I open an example drawing, or when I use the default project, the styles installed by Inventor, and a brand new simple cube created with the freshly installed Inventor default part and IDW templates.

I'm not sure if the non-display of line weight is related to my printing problem, but it seems likely.

Here's a zip of the files you posted, modified.... Try printing the IDW.

Have you checked these settings in Tools > Application Options > Drawing?

Thanks for your help. I opened the IDW you sent as an attachment. I did not change anything in it. In my Inventor display, hidden lines are dashed, but all lines are uniformly 1 pixel wide, rather than having different weights. You can see this in the attached screenshot. In the print preview, hidden lines are not dashed. In the printout (PDF) you can see clearly that all the lines are thin and solid. I DO have "Display Line Weights" checked in Application Options-> Display.

It is interesting that my Options window looks different from yours. The buttons are in a different place and some are different. I didn't think the options window could change. Are you running a different version of Inventor? I have Inventor Professional 11. Maybe this is part of my problem.

Sorry, I was in IV 2008 when I made the screenshot. However, I tested your
files in Inventor 11.

Did you try printing the PDF file I posted?

Since I seem to be the only person working on your problem, we probably
should take this off the newsgroup. Please feel free to contact me directly
by phone or e-mail. We can then post the solution to the newsgroup at a
later time.

Here's the resolution of the problem:

Subject: Re: Inventor printing; discussion from Autodesk forum

Dear Dennis, Brian, and Don:

Thank you for helping me in the past few days to discover the problem with
my Inventor computer. I believe I have made a breakthrough: It turns
out that there is a known problem with the latest Nvidia driver - (91.36).

In the Release Notes for the driver, on page 6, it says "There may be
intermittent application compatibility issues with dual core CPUs"

They recommend adding some registry DWORDs that disable multithreading in
the graphics driver. It seems to have solved my display refresh problems AND
printing problems. The problem with dual-core processors is of general
interest because more and more processors are dual core these days.

It is also interesting that a graphics driver could cause a printing
problem. I had thought that output to the printer would be independent of
the graphics driver, but, no, it's certainly not.

Thanks again and I hope this was an interesting nugget for you.
