Parts Column Substitution

Ver 9.

I have attached a jpg of how I have my parts list substitution set up.

A few months back I was looking at this very closely. I thought I had how it works all worked out.

Here is my problem. I would like to use the COMMENTS field for multiline descriptions (gear boxes, bearings etc) but I would like to use the content center hardware, which uses the description field. What I was trying to do was use come up with a way where I could use both by using the 'When exists, use value of:' setting. This was supposed to override the description column with the value from the comments column (when it exists).

I could have sworn I had it working as I just described back then. I guess I did not because I can't seem to make it happen now. When I have 'Enable Substitution' on, and I substitute the 'comments' field for the description field, the description column on the drawing goes blank for all items in the BOM.

I have read the help file and searched here but could not find a good description of how this works.

If someone else knows how this feature is supposed to work, please let me know. Thanks very much.

Dave,

If on the Substitution tab you change from "Sum of Values" to "First Value"
for the "When rows are merged..." field, does that give you the desired
results?

Hi Rich,

No it does not. That was my first try.

Am I understanding this feature correctly and it is just not working?

Anyone?

Does any one know if this works properly in ver 10?

Just trying to bring this to the top again. REALLY hope for answers. We are in starting in on the drawing stage of a 3000 hour design and have hit this road block. This project is a 'test' for us with Inventor and is being watched from all sides. I hope to get an answer and carry on one way or another soon.

Thanks.

I've just tested and it's working properly in R10, when the COMMENTS is blank, I get the original DESCRIPTION value and where the COMMENTS has some value it's used for DESCRIPTION

Dave,

This is in fact broken in R9, but fixed in R10.
