PETITION: Add CANCEL or ESC Command

It's 2012. It's HIGH TIME, Autodesk!! Stop giving us the runaround, feature request form links, the stonewalling. Stop giving us new buttons for the same old features. Listen to your users and stop putting up barricades.

Give us a CANCEL COMMAND or ESCAPE key functionality. A vast host of experienced Inventor users and gurus have begged, pleaded, cajoled for lo these many years. Enough is enough.

If you are a user and agree, please reply that you agree.

Autodesk, in case you haven't been reading these forums, here's a short list of threads throughout the years. The requesters reads like a who's who of Inventor users, mentors, and distinguished contributors. FOR 10 YEARS now:

Starting with:

Leo Laimer, Ed Rassmusen, Peer Hoffmann, 2002: http://tinyurl.com/7bm5ysg

If you are a user and agree, please reply that you agree.

Sean Dotson and Peer Hoffmann agreed in 2004 that a Cancel Command is needed.

It was requested 9 releases ago: http://tinyurl.com/6s8zgvf

I see also that Donovan Cox also agrees on the tail of the previous thread: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Inventor/I-want-a-Cancel-Button/td-p/554799

I agree with the addition of a Cancel or Esc command as well. I also know that we have for years and with every release of IV complained about speed first.

I can see this adding time, all be it a small amount to the process of each command, as it would require pausing each command process to scan the keyboard during each command, to check that a keyboard command has been issued to interrupt/cancel the operation.

I have no need for a cancel/esc command..

On the rare..rare occassion I might need it I would just use task manager and kill Inventor..

<sarcasm>What I would like is that Autodesk just continue moving/redoing the buttons/UI each and every year to keep me from getting bored... </sarcasm>

Ditto.

Now lets post some more about this subject...

That will really have an impact.

If it is added, I would like the option to turn it on/off in the application options.  I dont really think that it is needed and I only think it would slow Inventor down.

On rare occasions Inventor will hang, then I just use ctrl-alt-del and end the task. Not really sure if the esc key would help in that situation.

Agree!!!!

Along with the request of In-Stream modifiers for dimensions, which I've been begging for since Rev 5.3.

Here is a list of very familiar names that all agreed in 2006 that a Cancel Command function is needed:

Albert Allen

Richard Hinterholler

Patrick Berry

http://tinyurl.com/6pgmhw4

That was 6 years ago that this was requested.

mcgyver, you agreed 6 years ago that a Cancel Command feature would be useful:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Inventor/Is-there-any-way-to-have-the-cancel-button-actually-...

ampster, Even if you don't agree, there are plenty that do, like:

Patrick Berry,

Lon Neufeld,

Not that I'm aware of, probably because in order to have such a feature would require access to hardware level interupts. Most OS's block that level of access making it very difficult for any programmer to actually use a hardware level interupt. If they didn't, then there would be a lot more, very, very, deadly virus's out there.

What are in stream modifiers again? I know this has been a big deal for you for many years, but I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to?

Looks like the Inventor users are not alone.

Solidworks users rank the Cancel Command in amongst their top ten wishes. Maybe when Autodesk's primary competitor leads the way, that is when they will follow?

Back in 2006, the Cancel Command was added to the AUGI wishlist, to no avail.

The following notable contributors to the Inventor community all agreed 6 years ago that this feature was needed:

Sean Dotson

Troy Grose

hallstevenson

rimo625

lneufeld

R. Corriveau

I would love it for iLogic rules. I have a lot of assemblies heavy with code and I couldn't tell you how many times I click run rule or regenrate rule instead of edit rule. Then I have to wait 5 minutes for the code to execute.  Or worse, I do it on a rule that eventually closes the file. Then I get to wait 5 minutes for it to execute then another minute to reopen the thing. Very frustrating.
