Hello,
I've downloaded THIS model of an MTB. It is an OBJ file that I could open with Maya 2011 Trial. I was able to export it to IGS but all I've got was a way complicated wireframe model. Is there any way to convert this model to IGS as 3D solids? I'd like to use it in Inventor. If someone would do this, I'd appreciate that. I don't really need the whole model. I "only" need the frame, wheels and rims, cranks and pedals, saddle, seatpost, handlebar, headset, stem.
Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

it's not easy to do. I haven't looked at your file but I know from experience you will hardly have anything useful to work with from an .obj file which contains polygon data. What you need in inventor is NURBS data, usually imported from .iges or .step I just Googled "obj to nurbs" and two products show that should do the trick: tsplines (for Rhino but hopefully coming to Autodesk soon) and something interesting called RESURF: http://www.resurf3d.com/Objmesh2solid.htm
Good luck!
I'd been working with Rhino for a very short period but that was pretty much enough for me. RESURF couldn't do anything with the file, probably because of large number of lines. All I got was some weird abstract thing. I thought there's no way to convert it to something useful, but anyway, thanks. In fact, all I need is some simple Mountain Bike model. Do you have one? 🙂 I can buy one about 25$, but this is for hobby, so doesn't worth it.
In that case your best best is probably to look at GrabCAD.com There's an inventor model of a wheel with tyre here:
http://grabcad.com/david.hinchcliffe
There's a bicycle model I have used in the past, hosted over at MCAD
http://www.mcaduser.com/Portal/Models3d/17-Vehicles/
file: 170001
Looks like the attached, it's Pro-E, but actually is a dumb solid (no features)
Thanks, it will be OK.
