Need help extruding holes through out an object evenly

This is just a test shape, but I have various such shapes I need to create holes through, in an even, non overlapping manner. It would be best if i could use the shape of the object as a template, to create the holes rather than just making a   uniform, x by y, grid across the shape.

For this file I extruded a shape, create a projected shape on a different plane to use as reference for direction guide( I tried to use the original sketch to do so but it would only work by creating a copy on a different plane).

I tried this with a triangle as well, but I simply ignored all the extra holes created and if i ever encountered any overlapping holes, I found I could supress it through the browser. However, this method is tedious for non symetrical shapes.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance!
