Making Chess Pieces...

Has anyone attempted to draw chess pieces using Inventor and then make them using a lathe? I am a junior in high school and we are making them in my Computer Integrated Manufacturing class, and we are making them for our next project...If you haven never made them I would suggest looking into it if you have the capabilities. They are very cool. Bye

Yes,Our High School Junior Manufacturing Technology Students have designed a full set of detailed chess pieces in inventor and imported the model into our cam system (FeatureCAM)then posted the program to our HAAS Lathe with live tooling and manufactured all the pieces on the lathe. Good luck on your project!

I am starting to think I maybe should have went to
a different high school.  I got to play with AutoCAD 2.6 (without a
digitizer or mouse) for a couple weeks.

Me too.  I went to visit the new high school
they just built down here and the CAD lab looks like mission control in
Huston.  Each student has a LCD flatscreen with a P4 2GHz machine.
They have 20ish seats of IV.  NO wonder they raise the local sales tax

Think the only computer available when I was
in high school was Colossus and it was in Bletchley Park, England working
on Enigma ... well ... maybe Z3 but it only worked out firing solutions I think.
Never the less ... all of them were probably bigger than the high school I
went to anyway.

Beacuse of the limits that are present becuase of the use of the lathe, I had to improvise on the knight and make my own design...I have working with my teacher to try and make something that look similar to a horse.I have the parts here on my laptop, but how did you want to see them?

You could zip them up and post them to CF
(customer files); that's where we post files for others to look at, see if we
can figure out what's wrong, etc.

You might want to look at (search the NG)
***INVENTOR FAQ*** it has links to it and a lot of other links and info that
have to do with Inventor. Sean repost it every week.

I just copied the links to CF from
it.

You can either post the part or a screen shot of it as a attachment to
customer files. follow the proper link below. Be sure to zip up the file
to keep the size smaller.

W actually made our slide rules and calculators
were banned from exams, computers were things you read about in comic
books.

duke4709 -

It is very pleasing to see young people like yourself doing this stuff. My
son is 14 and uses Inventor on our home box. A chess set is one of the
projects he has been working on.

It is amazing how much easier he picks up on learning to use the software
than I have.
