MDT is dead

From an email from the Autodesk Subscription Team:

Autodesk has terminated development of Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop®
and will no longer release new versions of the product. This decision was
made to allow Autodesk to focus on the development of the Autodesk®
Inventor® and AutoCAD® Mechanical product lines.
As a result of this decision, Mechanical Desktop 2009 becomes the last
version of the product to be made available.

I thought some where back about 3-4 years ago Autodesk said that MDT would only get updated to keep it updated to latest AutoCAD format. So does this mean that they will stop even that finely. MTD is dead Long live IV.

Sorry I don't have a link, I just received an
e-mail from the Subscription Service today. I am sure that all "Subscription"
people will be receiving theirs.

It says that MDT 2009 will continue to be available by download for subscription customers. I'm not certain what that means for Autocad. Will a current version be included with AIS?

It means that MDT will not be included with future releases of
AIS, but it will be be available for download. Autocad is not MDT, and Autocad
will likely continue to be included with your AIS DVD.

There is no change with respect to the other components of Inventor. i.e. all four versions of Inventor contain a full copy of AutoCAD Mechanical and this will not change.

"Autocad is not MDT"

I understand that. I was concerned because there doesn't seem to be much motivation for Autodesk to include Autocad with Inventor now that MDT is out of the picture. Inventor doesn't need it to run. Wasn't the whole point to bundle MDT and IV so MDT users had more incentive to switch? Anyway, Simon's post addresses my concern.

Why is there no public announcement of this, just surreptitious e-mails to subscribers? More to the point, most CAD users in even medium-sized companies never see any communications from Autodesk Subscriptions. Those stay in the in-boxes of IT guys who would rarely bother even reading them unless the information directly impacts their day-to-day tasks of server-wrangling.
