Lines for sections in drawings

Anyone got any ideas on the following? This is happening on both 2012 and 2014, the workflow was what I followed offline to try and replicate an issue on a live project:

  1. Start a new part
  2. Draw a rectangle 10m x 10m fully constrained
  3. Extrude by 10m
  4. Save
  5. Start a new .dwg format drawing (though same results if using out of the box .idw)
  6. Place a top base view of the part
  7. Section the part anyway or direction in such a way not to infer any constraints
  8. Section properties set to include slice and slice the whole part
  9. Place the section
  10. Edit the sketch of the section line
  11. Apply a "fix" constraint to the line itself
  12. Finish the sketch

I then get an error saying the sketch does not contain a valid section line and the section disappears

  1. Edit the section line sketch
  2. Remove the fix constraint from the line
  3. Finish sketch

My section then reappears

  1. Edit the section line sketch
  2. Use a "fix" constraint on each end of the line
  3. Finish the sketch

My section remains. We're experiencing a lot of problems of section lines and therefore sections disappearing even though we're not directly applying fix constraints, I was wandering if Inventor applies a fix constraint should geometry that a section line is constrained to disappears.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

I am using 2012 and can't say as I have ever experienced that.  I don't ever place a fixed constraint on my sections and don't have any issues.  Any particular reason for the fixed constraints?

My other thought is are you running the latest SP's and updates?

Hi!

I experienced the same in 2014.

I think you found a bug... report it!!!    well done...

I wouldn't normally use fix constraints either but with the problem
we're experiencing I was exploring whether fix constraints on the
section lines would help by removing reliance on constraints to geometry
that may be disappearing during modelling changes.

I am all up to date with service packs.

Kind regards

Chris

Can you post some files in 2012 exhibiting this behavior?

Hi,

2012 Files as requested. Open the .dwg, edit the sketch and apply a fix constraint to the line itself, finish the sketch and hopefully you'll get an error and the section disappears. Edit the sketch, select the line, RMB, remove the fix constraint, finish the sketch and it comes back.

Chris

Chris,

That is truly bizzare!!!  Smiley Surprised  Happened just like you said.

Like I said I have never used a fixed constraint on the section line, but obviously that should not happen.

Based on the response from Autodesk it would appear that this is being investigated.

I guess the moral of the story for now is don't apply a fixed constraint to your section sketch line.  Smiley Wink
