Line corners are not constrained

When I make lines consecutively (imagine drawing a letter z) and then changing the dimension of the diagonal line in the middle, the z doesn't become taller. Basically it seems as if my lines are all independent and not auto constraining from point to point. How do i reenable this feature?

While in a sketch, check to be sure your "Constraint Inference" and "Constraint Persistence" settings are both turned on.

 

They are next to the constraint buttons, and the Constraint Persistence icon looks much like the perpendicular constraint, so it is easy for them to get turned off by mistake.
