Knurling

Is there a way to knurl just a small piece of a part without turning the material for the whole part to knurled?

A work around that I have used is to set as knurl then extrude ends 0.0005

Yes, can you zip and post what you have so far? (The ipt that is.)

This one has a .5" straight knurl starting .1" from the tapered section going away from the taper

Your sketches do not have any dimensions and are not constrained to the origin. How did you create a precise sketch with no dimensions?
Check out this document
http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf
You can control a color (texture) by part, by feature or by face properties. RMB on feature in browser or on face to change properties.
The scale of the texture can be changed in the Style Editor.
Pull down the red End Of Part marker in the browser.

Here's one using a split face and the Metal-Steel Knurled style.

Observations:

1. Your part is far from the origin. Why?
2. Even if this was an imported DWG, then you still need to constrain,
dimension and anchor
3. I had to go back to the sketch and throw out a dim to determine where to
place the splitting plane accurately.
This takes time. Do you have a lot of it?
4. This is easily accomplished using a split face and then selecting the
desired face, RMB and select properties for that face.

A machine designer probably would not go to the trouble of creating a
physical knurl on a part in an overall large assembly. I can see it for a
detail presentation or rendering, but anything other than a bitmap will
bring performance issues in a large assembly that utilizes a quantity of
parts with this kind of detail.

Not to mention the time required to create physical details.

I use the dimentions to place my lines and etc. but then I delete them so they don't get in my way and clutter the work space.

Sorry i said it wrong the krul is 1" long and on the other one thr knurl is .5" long starting from the points given. I import the drawings from MDT but the drawing is not on the origin hense the distance of the origin.

Why not just open the MDT part in Inventor? No need to recreate...

I can't believe you actually said that! What happens when you need to change the model? Do you go back and re-dimension everything? This isn't ACAD.

Your dimensions serve to constrain your part so that when you want to make any changes down the road your changes will be predictable and avoid any head aches or night mares.

In MDT the first thing you should do is create origin planes and use them. Put them in your template. I'm a but surprised that your teacher lets you get away with these inefficient modeling practices.
