Inventor step files and derived parts, what is the method?

I am working on a big project for a client. Now all aour own objects can be checked in the vault. Now i also get a lot of step files of components that i need to use. But somehow it does exctract itself in parts in the "imported components" map which ofcourse has a kind of file naming that conflicts to get it into the vault and renaming all those parts is not an option.

This is also the thing when i open a step file, save it as part/assembly and then opn it as a derived part and save this as .ipt. still it references to the imported components

What is the right way when getting a step file, make it as small as possible and make it a standalone one! part of it, without references?

thanks, would really help me to get this problem solved

John
