Inventor hangs when importing Step files. I have tried unchecking the embed in document option with no luck. Is there anything else I can try?
TIA
Tom

You have provided almost no useful information for the purpose of diagnosing your problem.
Q1. Can you save a simple cube as STEP?
Q2. Can you then open this simple STEP file that was created by Inventor in Inventor?
Q3. Is this a new problem on this install, did it work once, or did it never work?
Q4. What version of Inventor?
Q5. All Service Packs and Updates?

"embed in document" is ONLY for the translation report and I'd hope would have NO impact on the actual import process other than where to save the text file that says it was imported, blah blah blah....
You left out the critical information in Q3 in your original post (and the related information that it works fine on small models).
You did not answer the last two questions.
Q6. System Specs?
Q7. Have you turned off quality checking and set to save parts on open.

Actually there was a bug in an earlier release where turning this off did allow the translation. I think it was fixed in a SP.

Make sure Post Processing
Check Parts during load
and
Auto Stitch
Advance Healing
are turned off.
Make sure to have Save Components during Load is active.
8Gig might be too little for a file that size.

I'm not convinced that RAM will solve the problem.
Can you send me the file or post it on Autodesk 360?

I tried opening in Inventor 2014 set to Solids only.
The file opened - but nothing there - no solids.
I tried opening in 2014 & 2013 filtered for Surfaces only.
Crashed both.
I tried opening in Creo 2 but it failed (but no crash like Inventor).
I tried importing in to Fusion 360, but could not figure out how.
Edit: finally got an email that import into Fusion failed.
I tried opening in SolidWorks 2013 and it successfully opened (780 solid bodies, 2213 surface bodies) in about 20 minutes (comp specs below). The file has a modeled wire screen mesh (not sure if it is ok with OP to post screen shot here).

Ok, thanks for all that work but what does that mean for me. Are you saying I need to find some one with Solild works?
Either that, or wait a few days and see if I get a chance to repair the file and send it back to you.
I suspect that Autodesk might be interested in this file for testing purposes.
Is it OK to distribute, and if so, any limitations?

Hello Tom,
Can you give me access to your file? I'd like to do some tests with it and see if there's really a problem to import it in Inventor 2014.
I can enable a FTP site for you to upload the file if necessary.
Thanks,
Hi Tom,
Thanks for sharing the STEP file. I found no problem opening it in Autodesk Inventor Professional 2014 SP1 with Update 1. I used a computer with 12 GB RAM and it took about 20 minutes to import it. The file contains solids and surfaces and the translation report shows some warnings.
I'll do some more tests with Inventor 2013 and will report my findings to you.
Hello Tom,
I posted the Inventor part files to the FTP site. I imported the file in Inventor 2013 and 2014 so you will find 2 files there.
The import process takes a long time if you enable the option 'Import into Repair Environment'. If that option is disabled, the process is much faster.
There were some warnings in regards to the quality of the imported surfaces. Please take a look at the translation report in the model browser for more details.
If you have any questions please let me know.
