Inventor Link in ACAD

Hi,  I am trying to find a workaround for a current problem I face.  I have some tools we use in ACAD which will calculate various properties as well as applying visable lines to show seen, painted, machined faces etc.

I want all our development work to be done in Inventor but until we have these same tools in Inventor this is not possible so I am trying to find a way to work using Inventor but have files in ACAD which are still linked to the Inventor files.

the limitation of the ACAD tools we use is they only work with lines and polylines etc.  so I can not use them on the Inventor linked parts.

anybody think of a way to do this?

My current workaround is to create in 3D and then use either export faces to get the profile face I want for use in ACAD or to produce a drawing and save as a ACAD dwg.  Both break the link to the Inventor ipt or iam.

If I understand your request correctly you could do some  if not all in Inventor. Have you looked a splitting the surface to represent painted and machined areas of a model. Attached is a cube that I split a then assigned different property colors. Please look at the attached file and see if I’m on track with your request.

Inventor Fusion (with Inv 2012) is really good for bringing Inventor files into AutoCAD but then the link is broken. Can't go back to inventor with same 3D model to edit further.

I am currently with a company that say they must model in AutoCAD but I'd much rather work with Inventor. I showed them how easy it is to bring Inventor models into AutoCAD with Fusion, but they want the models to be live so they can be edited further when in AutoCAD. Is there a way to bring those 3D models back to Inventor to edit them further without having to create new files?

Most 3D models are positioned in larger assemblies and they don't want to have to insert and reposition them again every time they need editing.

Maybe all the 3D models (parts & assemblies) in the AutoCAd drawings could be xref's.

Then there'd be two versions of each 3D model. One would be the original Inventor ipt/iam and second would be an AutoCAD 3D-solids version.

Then, if they neded to be edited in Inventor, they could be re-saved with the same name and would have the same insertion point. Then they'd behave themselves in the AutoCAD assembly drawing?

Thanks for the reply.  The tools we use are to calculate the cross sectional inertia of a composite extruded part (window frames).  We also use line different line types associated to layers to display the primary and secondary painted surfaces as well as any mechanical treatments.

I am sure all of this can be done using inventor and the API but I don't think it is possible with the standard functions.  If you have any ideas though I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Guy
