You could crop to just the graphics area, add a transparency effect from
a photo editor and then use that for a background.

Yeah right, I have a hard enough time finding the dimensions I need. Imagine

Take a snap shot of your coworkers screen with a model up. Make it his
background and start a blank part file. Sit back and watch the fun...

I did that to one of my former co-workers of his Acad screen. He couldn't
figure out why all his desktop icons were showing up in Acad.
