what do you mean "make top views with 2D capabilities"? Do you mean draw the top view manually? If so, I would stick to ACAD.

Can you make a Base View of your assembly and orient it so you are looking at the "top"?

If the question is can you do 2D in IV. Then yes.
Use idw template to start and place your view.

If the question is can you do it of an assembly with thousands of parts the answer is yes just slowly.

Yes to both. I need help in how to accomplish a 2D drawing both from scratch, and from an assemble with 2D capabilities like ACAD has. If there is any way you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I like to have the assembly open when doing this.

Create 2D from Inventor Assembly

File, New, Select idw template. Place your base view. Then subsequent views. Select Anotation from top of panel.

Take a look ing the help file.

2D drawing from scratch.

Use Acad.
