Inventor 2011 Rendering

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me?

I have Inventor 2011 Professional and when I take a simple block that I created as a part and the place it in a assembly - save the assembly and the go to Inventor Studio - I try to render an animation that I created or just a simple JPEG. My inventor closes down completely after just a few seconds of rendering.

The settings of my rendered animation is as follow
General
Width x Height = 800 x 600
Camera = Camera 1
Lightning style = Current Lightning
Scene Style = XY Ground Plane
Render Type = Shaded

Output
It saves it to my Current Project file
Time range = 0 - 30 s
Antialiasing = Low Antialiasing
Format = Video
Frame Rate = 10
Preview and Launch player is unticked

I've tried to use the lowest setting of everything but then the quality is very poor and unacceptable!

If I try it on the above settings "which is not that hi" it closes my Inventor a few seconds into the rendering.

After it is closed it is still running in my Task Manager under processes at 800,000k - 900,000k

Then I have to kill it there!!

Please help as I am stuck and need this to work.

My PC Spec is as follow

Windows XP SP3
Intel Core 2 Extreme
CPU Q6850 @ 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 3.00 GB of RAM

Graphics - NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 512 MB Version 60.84.63.00.17

And what are your machine specs? Every system is different, depending on
graphics card version and operating system.

I had a reponse from inventor support today, see their respose below,

Hi Wayne,

Sorry for the late response.

Thank you for uploading files. I've reproduced the crash and
addressed this issue in our defect tracking system. Our developer
will investigate the cause and get it fixed in the future.

Best Regards,

William

When Inventor crashes, did you send out the crash report? If yes, could you send it again and send me an email after that? I would like to take a look at the report.
Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,
Not a rendering issue but an attempt to return your attention to chamfer
abnormality we discussed a few weeks ago. Did you have a chance to look into
it?
Thanks,
Igor.

Hi

I've sent the error report through to you on the above mentioned address.

Many thanks for your help!

Please inform me of any more info you require from me or suggestions.

Thanks again

Dont think its a pc or graphics driver issue.

I think its an Inventor Studio issue, have had the same problems. Have an ongoing support request.

PC spec.

Intel Quad core 2.93 GHz,
24 GB memory.
64 bit Windows 7.
1 GB Quadro FX3800 with both Autodesk certified and latest drivers (crashed using both)

Just a quick update.

Had a reply from Autodesk, yes its a problem, but only on 64 bit systems, according to them, but this thread clearly shows people are having the issue on 32 bit systems.

They plan to have a fix in SP1, which will be released in August !!!!!!

Not impressed. Edited by: simontownsend1092 on May 12, 2010 11:11 AM

AUGUST????

I don't want to open a con o' worms - but why are we paying good money for
stuff that doesn't work.

I admit that this is my first real gripe since way back from Inventor4, but
in my simple world, you pay good money - you get good service or product.

Wayne.

Mine's been working fine on xp64 since I updated my drivers... no
complaints. It's possible that it's still partially a hardware issue.
2011 might be more sensitive to variations in hardware due to the
incorporation of the material libraries.

I got a workaround from one customer:

"Setting Affinity for Inventor.exe to 1 proc did the trick. When I did
this, I was able to render in any resolution albeit VERY slowly, but it did
work."

Steps:
1. Start Inventor, start Windows Task Manager,
2. Find Inventor.exe, right mouse click and select "Set Affinity",
3. Keep CPU 0 checked, uncheck others. Press OK.
4. Start rendering.

Would you please try this workaround?

Thanks,
William

No solutions, for this one I'm afraid. Just to confirm that this problem is not just on XP 64bit machines, I have similar issues on my XP32bit 4GB RAM machine. Even with the 3GB switch. August?? Must be a major problem?

I have been in touch with Autodesk regardign this issue, and they hinted that I might have too little memory (4GB).

We have now ordered more memory for my PC, to see if this will help...

Dennis Jeffrey, how much memory do you have on your Inventor PC?

Best regards,
Christian

My machine is running an HP workstation, XP Pro 32bit. 4GB RAM, 1GB Nvidia Graphics. Tech support suggested to me that it may be too little memory 4GB. Was I using the 3GB switch etc. (which I was)?

I now have 2 issues now, -
i) Yes I could get more memory but I'm not clear if XP32 bit can make use of it?
ii) I was considering upgrading my machine to 64bit but now I read the forum posts I'm not sure that would be the cure either.?

The thing that bugs me in all this is the modelling environment seems to be fine. I like some of the new enhancements to 2011. It looks as though Inventor Studio 2011, which no all make use of, had insufficient testing?

For my part I am faced with using 2010 again until this problem has been resolved. I would be interested in knowing if memory upgrade is the solution for a XP32bit system. Anybody tried this yet?

I've been trying the workaround you suggested for the past hour now.

It seems to go further (rendering) but still doesn’t not complete the 35s video clip!

This is by far the best solution yet but still not fixing the problem!!!

I used to only be able to render about 20 frames out of the 500 that I need for this specific video clip.
Now at least I got to 320 frames out of the 500.

Thanks William - this might be a short term solution to the bigger problem if you can manage to "cut" your video up into smaller sections and use another program to add them together after INVENTOR has rendered it.

As to shrink wrapping my model?? This is out of the question as I have constraints that need to be moved......

My model can not be too big as it only has 53 parts in it. As I explained in one of the first post that I put up is that this "crashing" happens even on a small part like a block. (A simple extrusion of a rectangle)

There are people working on much bigger pc's and they are also experiencing the same problem.

The fact is that it doesn't really make a big difference if you are using a 32bit system or a 64bit system. The difference is minimal in performance or speed. The biggest problem is Inventor.

I would suggest INVENTOR 2011 to everyone as the new features make my life much easier and more convenient, but if you want to render??????? I don’t think so.......

Why did 2010's rendering work fine but not 2011?? What is the big difference........?

Thanks for pointing me to William Wang's workaround post.
William, Thanks, yes it worked for me also.
I have been able to achieve 3 high quality static renderings in a row using 2011.
I could not finish 1 before.

Ok why does this work? I have never had to change a programs affinity before? I'm not that much of a computer expert but here are my observations:

Again, I am using HP Dual Processor Workstation, XP Pro 32bit,(3GB switch), 4GB RAM, Nvidia 1GB Graphics Card. Also multi monitors via Matrox Triple Head Unit, + Space Pilot.

Before trying this workaround I have looked at rendering the same model in 2010 & 2011.
With task manager active it became obvious that 2011 Inventor was hitting my memory a lot harder than 2010.
Each time I rendered I could see the page file get larger, within one or two renders it was up around 2GB then Inventor would crash.

Using this work around, CPU 0 is 100% active & CPU 1 appears to be almost inactive.
However, looking at my page file this time, after 3 renders in a row, the page file is only 1.6GB. & no crashes.
Yes it was slower but it worked.

I've not had the nerve to do any animations yet but from these initial tests, using the workaround, I notice that
after each closing of the render window the page file increases slightly. I assume that the workaround is delaying the inevitable crash which will eventually occur at some point during the animation?

Over to the experts, any clues in the above, hardware or software?

I just had my Inventor system upgraded from 4 GB to 12 GB.

The result is almost the same, it now renders approx. 90% before crashing (before it was 30-40% ), this time giving the opportunity to send an error report.

This is not good.

Best regards,
Chris
