Duncan,
You can always use a Surface or a Solid as the split tool. You can first
pick the faces you want to split (part faces or surface faces) and then pick
a solid or a surface as split tool. There is a UI glitch in Split dialogbox
though. Somehow Split Tool is the first pick when you launch the command and
you are not allowed to pick solid as split tool.
