Included File help please

Can someone please explain the use of the Included File path.. I assumed that it enabled 2 ipj files to be used but when the 2nd ipj file is referenced in the Included File path it becomes the active project.
Regards,
Mike

Mike,

The intent of the Include File is to provide a path
to standard components used in all assemblies like nuts, bolts, washers, etc.
The paths to the nuts, bolts, washers, etc would be defined in this
normal project file located on the server were all Inventor users could see
it. In this project file, the Relative Path should be set to True. This will
allow the components subdirectories to be moved to new locations without the
resolving the links.

Next, you can have only one Include File per
project file.

It is very important that you understand and use
project files correctly. They can be your biggest friend if you understand them,
or your biggest problem if you do not understand them.

Good Luck,

John

Thanks for that John. I'm still not clear however as to its use. We have all our standard parts in a Library folder that we specify in the Library Search Path field. So how different is the Included File path & what use is it if IV sets it as the active project. We do get on well with Projects & Design Assist but this one's got me baffled !

Mike,

Take the standard parts paths defined in your
Library Seach Path in each project, and define them to a seperate project file.
Then add that project file to each project file as the include File. Then
if you move your standard parts, all you have to edit is the standrard parts
project file and not each project file.

Think of the Include File as something like an
xRef.

The included file is also used in the semi-isolated environment. You
set up a global project file for a project, then each person working on
the project sets up a personal project file that only has a workspace
referenced in it. the global project file is then listed as the
included file. This allows users to work on a common project but can do
their work on a local basis until they are ready to check in the files
and share with everyone else. Keep changes from stepping on one another.

If you are planning on using Autodesk Vault in the
future, just remember that Local and Workgroup search paths are not
allowed.  Included files are not allowed either.
