Importing Inventor 6 files into 3ds Max shuts down the software

As noted in the topic, every time that I try to import a part file created by Inventor 6, 3ds Max shuts down. This was not a problem with Inventor 5.3 so I'm thinking that it is an Inventor issue. Any ideas?

Did you update Max to be compatible with v6? It should have been released to you
(if you bought the subscription) If not, you will have to keep using IV 5.3
files with 3d Max. This is pretty typical procedure.

I installed Max ver 5.1 and then added the plugin path to the correct Inventor 6 directory, shut down Max and then restarted the software. Is there some kind of update that I need in order to use Inventor 6 files? I would have thought that it would be covered in the plugins.

I believe that you need R6SP2 to facilitate this
workflow.

I just updated to SP2 for Inventor and 3ds Max 5.1 still shuts down whenever I try to import an Inventor file. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for the help. This is the first time that I've had any problems with the import plugins.

hmmm...

R6 supports Max/Viz 3 or 4

I believe R7 supports 4 and above - let me
double-check with development.

There are two sets of plug-ins. One set works for
Max/Viz versions prior to 4 the other set works for 4 and newer.

The plug-ins that you should be using would be
named:

InventorImport2.dli

InventorImport1.dlu

Can you double-check that these are the ones your
system is using?

Also,  in the readme for the plug-in it
states the correct installation procedure for each plug-in.

Those are the files that 3ds Max is using. Do you think that I would have to install Inventor 7 before I could import something? Are the Max import plugins upgraded with each new release?

I know that you have to take manual action to point
to the plug-ins. I also know that there were changes made between 6 and 7. I
confess to being reduced to asimple "go between" on this. I don't have VIZ or
MAX loaded but I have seen some issues with this workflow and previously
contacted the developer. I did so in this case too and you got the information
that I got.

I'll keep working on it. I can use one of the other import/export options but nothing beats brining in an entire assembly complete with names and in the correct position. Like I said, I will keep trying.

You need to have the correct plugin files that
correspond with the version of Inventor that is installed.  For
Inventor 6 SP2 the plugin is available for Max 3 and for Max 4 and
newer.  The corresponding files are: InventorImportMAX3.dli and
InventorUtilityMAX3.dlu for Max 3 and InventorImport.dli and
InventorUtility.dlu for Max 4 and newer.  Follow the set up instructions in
the readme and be sure to use the correct version of the plugin
files.

Its best to use the default locations when
installing Max for the plugin to work correctly.

The files are available for download.

At this time Max 3 is no longer supported
and the corresponding plug-in is not available with Inventor
7.
The plugin for Max 4 and
newer is provided with Inventor 7.

Thank you so much! I downloaded the new plugins after installing SP2, and now everything has been importing! WoooHooooo! Thanks again. That's two big headaches that have been solved by the forums on this site.
