IV8 Migration Question...

What are the benefits and/or drawbacks to migrating files enmasse using the
migration utility versus just open the files as you need them and saving
them in the new format?

Advantages:
1) Time required to open the migrated files. If you migrate on-the-fly by
opening a document that was created in the older version, Inventor has to
not only open it but also migrate that file and every file that it
references. Batch migration can be done overnight.

2) Many people experience better migration with the external Migration
Utility. By this I mean that there are (usually) less problems with
parts/assemblies/drawings/presentations opening properly if they are
migrated with the MU prior to them being opened in the newer version of
Inventor.

Disadvantages:
As long as the migration is done overnight or on a computer that isn't
needed by a user, I don't know of any...

Over night maybe ... unless it stops. Mine bucked on about 4 files with
imported surfaces that worked fine in R7. There's no way to make the MU keep
running for sure. Least not that I know of.

Yeah, it would be nice if there was an option in the MU to skip over files
that don't migrate properly, but of course, add that information into the
MU's log file so the user knows which files need to be "manually" migrated
if necessary and possible...

To me, that seems to be the biggest issue with using the MU. You start it,
go home, and come back the next day to find out it choked on the 10th file
and sat there doing nothing all night.

While there may be some problems with this utility I can say they are
dramatically improved over the first few revisions. I am responsible for
updating many thousands of parts as I mentioned in a previous post. In some
of the first migration it would choke every 50 or so files. The way I deal
with the migrations today is I install the latest Inventor version on each
Engineers workstation and in a logical fashion migrate all of the data. I
am fortunate enough to have VPN capabilities and WinXP on each machine so I
can remotely monitor all the progress from the comfort of my home office.
In times past I have actually babysat the entire process over the course of
a weekend.
I was happy to pay for DSL to get this capability.

Come on Greg, Scott needs to be paying for that DSL connection! It's a necessary work related function, REALLY!
